Curt Cignetti signed a monster contract extension on Thursday, one that will keep him in Bloomington through the 2033 season and pay him $93 million.
Under the terms of his previous contract, if Cignetti left for another job, he had a buyout figure of $10 million through Nov. 30, 2026. According to a report from ESPN’s Pete Thamel on Thursday, that buyout was bumped to $15 million under the terms of the new extension.
The contract is also fully guaranteed, according to a report from ESPN’s Adam Rittenberg. If the Hoosiers were ever to fire the coach without cause, he would get the full $93 million from the school. This remains unchanged from his previous deal, which guaranteed the entirety of his contract in the event he made the College Football Playoff.
It’s a great deal for Cignetti, and it shows that Indiana is all-in on being a contender for the CFP each year moving forward.
Cignetti has put the Hoosiers on the map since he became the coach 2 seasons ago. Last year, he led the Hoosiers to the Playoff, and the team this year looks to be even better after knocking off Oregon in Eugene in Week 7.
With that type of success in Bloomington, rumors had started to swirl that Cignetti could be a candidate for larger programs, but Indiana moved quickly in an attempt to end that conversation. The contract figures to have him as the Hoosiers’ coach for some time, but the buyout clause for him to leave for another school might not be viewed as prohibitive to programs with bigger budgets.
Things couldn’t be better at Indiana, as the Hoosiers are ranked No. 3 in the AP poll, which is the highest ranking in the history of the program.
The Hoosiers will look to build off the monster upset against the Ducks when they take on Michigan State on Saturday at 3:30 p.m. ET.
