Irvine Novaquatics’ Luke Collins has verbally committed to Ohio State University for the fall of 2027.
Collins hails from Aliso Viejo, California, and competes for Santa Margarita Catholic High School, where, as a sophomore, finished 17th overall in the 500 free, clocking 4:31.79, just off of his best time that he set in the prelims of 4:30.73.
This past summer, Collins swam two lifetime bests at the Speedo Junior National Championships (LCM), clocking 4:00.90 in the 400 free in prelims (31st overall in finals in 4:02.19) and 8:21.15 in the 800 free (37th). He also turned in a 91st place finish in the 200 breaststroke, clocking 2:24.79.
Collins had a very productive showing at the Speedo Winter Junior Championship – West (SCY) this past December, notching best times in two of his primary events, he clocked 3:59.74 in the 400 IM (47th), and 15:35.13 in the 1650 free to earn his highest finish at 24th. He also set a best time (at the time) in the 500 free, stopping the clock in 4:31.03, good enough for 60th.
The high school junior also holds a best time in the 1000 free of 9:21.54 from the CA RMDA Kevin Perry Senior Invitational last November. He has some range in the middle distance department as well, boasting times of 1:42.19 in the 200 free, 1:55.75 in the 200 butterfly, and 2:06.94 in the 200 breast.
Collins is the son of Amy Shaw, who was the first American woman to swim under the 2:30 mark in the long course 200 breaststroke, clocking 2:29.78 at the 1987 U.S. National Championships. She also competed collegiately for the University of Texas.
Best Times SCY:
200 Free: 1:42.19 500 Free: 4:30.73 1000 Free: 9:21.54 1650 Free: 15:35.13 400 IM: 3:59.74 200 Fly: 1:55.75 200 Breast: 2:06.94The Buckeye men finished 3rd at the 2025 Big 10 Swimming and Diving Championships last season. Based on Collins’ best times, he would have finished 38th in the 500 free, 25th in the 1650 free, and 37th in the 400 IM.
There is a nice mix of stroke and freestyle ability on Collins’ repertoire. There will be some flexibility as to what he chooses to be his 3rd event aside from the 500 and 1650.
Collins will join Camren Turowski, Colt Chaires, and Ewan Dalrymple in the Ohio State 2027 recruiting class.
