If you were anticipating a Chicago Bears kicker controversy, think again.
Bears Head Coach Ben Johnson confirmed with reporters on Wednesday that the team would turn the keys back over to Cairo Santos whenever he is given medical clearance. This news comes days after Jake Moody went from practice squad fodder to folk hero by making four kicks against the Washington Commanders — including the game-winner as time expired. Moody has reverted to the practice squad. But if Santos can’t give it a go on Sunday against the New Orleans Saints, then Moody will get the promotion to the active game-day roster this weekend. Given the uncertainty with Santos’ health, we’ll keep tabs on this situation and provide updates as details arise.

In addition to the Cairo Santos nugget from Bears Head Coach Ben Johnson, the team also released its first injury report ahead of its Week 7 game against the New Orleans Saints. For what it’s worth, the participation report is an estimation because the team held a walk-through instead of practicing. Anyway, this is what it looks like:
DNPs: Right guard Jonah Jackson (ankle), defensive tackle Grady Jarrett (knee), wide receiver DJ Moore (hip/groin), kicker Cairo Santos (right thigh), linebacker Noah Sewell (concussion) FULL PARTICIPATION: Defensive end Austin Booker (knee), running back Travis Homer (calf)The good news is that we have an update (as well as some clarity) regarding stud receiver DJ Moore.
“It was precautionary. I think we got some good news on that,” Johnson said (h/t CBS Sports). “He should be coming back today, here, and I think he’ll be day-to-day going forward. It was a groin deal that he was dealing with and I think we’re going to be OK.”
While the good news is that the Bears head coach sees Moore’s injury as a “day-to-day” thing, that still doesn’t give us a full idea of what a timetable for a return could look like. I suppose the silver lining here is that DJ didn’t immediately go on injured reserve. And while Chicago has pass-catchers it can use to try to fill the gaps in Moore’s absence, I fear that the offense won’t click the same without him. His play-making ability as a receiver (and running back) is well-known around these parts, but let’s not lose sight of the fact that he grades out as one of the NFL’s better run-blocking wide receivers.

PLAYERS WHO DID NOT PRACTICE: Running back Alvin Kamara (ankle), cornerback Isaac Yiadom (hamstring) PLAYERS WHO WERE LIMITED IN PRACTICE: Wide receiver Chris Olave (hip), cornerback Alontae Taylor (knee) PLAYERS WHO WERE FULL PARTICIPATION: Defensive tackle John Rideway III (shoulderI haven’t watched the Saints at all. But seeing Alvin Kamara on the injury report and noticing that his 3.8 yards per carry average is well below his career average of 4.4 yards per attempt is striking. Save for their Week 6 game against the Washington Commanders, the Bears have struggled mightily when it comes to stopping the run. I imagine that a less-than-full-strength Alvin Kamara would make for an easier task to tackle on Sunday.
