Fall has arrived in full force, bringing pumpkin patches, harvest festivals and enough Halloween frights to keep you screaming through the season. But if you need a break from the spooky stuff, there’s plenty of film, music and family fun to fill your weekend too. 

The San Diego International Film Fest runs through this weekend and you’ve still got time to grab tickets. Catch “San Diego Scene,” showcasing homegrown short films, or Fantasy Life, a comedy starring Amanda Peet. There’s also Matter of Time, a documentary following Pearl Jam’s Eddie Vedder – a San Dieguito High School alum – as he joins forces with a community determined to find a cure for a rare disease. The festival is also spotlighting work from its FOCUS on Impact art competition for San Diego-area youth. Most screenings are at Westfield UTC. Tickets start at $20 per film. 

The Peter Sprague Trio kicks off La Jolla Music Society’s fall Wu Tsai QRT.yrd Concert Series at 4:30 p.m. Friday at The Conrad in La Jolla. The free outdoor concert brings together multi-award-winning musicians Peter Sprague and Danny Green with frequent collaborator Mackenzie Leighton for an afternoon of jazz grooves, improvisations and ballads. No tickets required, but reservations are encouraged at www.theconrad.org.

Mission Bayfest takes over Mariner’s Point Park in Mission Beach starting at 3 p.m. Friday and continuing Saturday and Sunday at noon, with more than 30 acts across two expanded stages celebrating reggae, rock and California vibes. Headliners include Sublime, Ocean Beach’s Slightly Stoopid, Rebelution, 311, Steel Pulse and Pepper, plus hip-hop legend KRS-One and a DJ set from Chromeo. General admission and VIP tickets are still available.

The first-ever Native American Heritage Festival hosted by the Native Youth Foundation takes place from 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Saturday at Grape Day Park in Escondido. The free, all-ages event celebrates the traditions and culture of tribal nations across Southern California with live music, cultural demonstrations, Native food and a youth fashion show featuring seven Indigenous designers. Highlights include an opening bird singing ceremony, performances by Native artists and a proclamation and awards ceremony with local officials. 

The free D6 Fall Festival is back from 3-9 p.m. Saturday at the Mira Mesa Senior Center. Bring the family for food trucks, crafts, a movie in the park with free popcorn, trunk-or-treat and pumpkin decorating. 

San Diego Wave FC wraps up its regular season at home Saturday with Fan Appreciation Night against Chicago Stars FC at 7 p.m. at Snapdragon Stadium. The first 10,000 fans get limited-edition hockey-inspired long-sleeve tees. A pregame Fan Fest runs from 3-6:30 p.m. with a Pura Vida bracelet giveaway, games and the third annual “Fill the Truck” toy drive benefiting three community partners. Donate a toy and you’ll be entered to win a 2025 signed team jersey and custom 2026 jersey. Stick around for halftime fireworks and free car wash promotion. “Kids Go Free” tickets are available while supplies last. 

If you’re craving costumes, candy and things that go bump in the night, here’s your Halloween fix.

The Gaslamp Quarter is serving up scares and family fun this weekend. History buffs can join the Ghosts of the Gaslamp Walking Tour at 5 p.m. Friday to explore haunted landmarks and chilling legends with guide Sandee, the Gaslamp Ghost Lady. The Lair of Nightmares pop-up bar at 615 Broadway offers an immersive 21-and-over horror experience with creepy cocktails and live scare actors Friday and Saturday. For families, The Shout! House hosts two Halloween shows Sunday with dueling pianos, a costume contest and treats. Doors open at 1 p.m. and 4 p.m. Tickets start at $10. 

El Cajon’s free Hauntfest on Main returns from 4-9 p.m. Friday along East Main Street between Magnolia Avenue and Ballantyne Street. Enjoy live music on two stages, costume contests, carnival rides, face painting, a reptile petting zoo and a haunted car show. Next door, step right up to The Magnolia’s annual “Haunted Circus: Monsters at Play” at 5:30 p.m. and 7:30 p.m., featuring contortionists, acrobats and stilt walkers.

Fright for Future runs for two weekends starting Friday at 4 p.m., shining a light on issues affecting people, the planet and animals through interactive scares. The socially conscious haunted maze for ages 10 and up features 20 activations including a biohazard unit and butcher shop. New attractions in Normal Heights at 3720 El Cajon Blvd. highlight the dangers of tech, processed food and big tobacco. Admission is free, but reserve your spots online – if you dare.
