The El Gouna Film Festival (GFF) has announced the screening schedule for the Egyptian Oscar contender, “Happy Birthday,” which will serve as the opening film for the festival’s eighth edition, kicking off on Thursday.
The film’s cast and creators will attend the screenings.
Beyond its opening night status, the movie has been officially selected to represent Egypt in the race for the 2025 Academy Award for Best International Feature Film.
Story
The directorial debut of Sara Goher, “Happy Birthday” is a touching social drama that explores themes of class division in Cairo.
Its plot centers on the intersection of a wealthy child’s birthday celebration with the hopes of a working-class girl who mistakenly believes she has been invited.
Producer Ahmed al-Desouky expressed his delight at the film being chosen to open GFF, noting the festival’s growing prominence and its increasing role in marketing Egyptian films over recent years.
He added that the major turnout of stars, journalists, and critics guarantees wide viewership in one of Egypt’s most beautiful Red Sea cities.
El Desouky confirmed the film’s general public release date would be announced soon.
The film was written by Sara Goher and Mohamed Diab.
It stars Nelly Karim and Hanan Motawie, with supporting roles by Hanan Youssef, child actors Douha Ramadan, Joumana, Cady Mohamed, Fares Omar, and several guest stars, including Sherif Salama and Aly Sobhy.
Screening times and events
The film’s first screening is scheduled for Friday, October 17, at seven pm at the El Gouna Conference Center, preceded by a red carpet event.
The second screening will be held on Saturday, October 18, at 4:45 PM at Audimax Cinema, followed by a discussion with the stars and filmmakers.“Happy Birthday” is also competing for the “Cinema for Humanity” award, which is granted by the festival audience to a feature film addressing significant human issues.
