Ravi Shastri reveals when Virat Kohli & Rohit Sharma will retire from ODI cricket ...Middle East

Sport by : (Inside sport) -

It’s that time again when questions around Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma’s future start circling Indian cricket. Both have stepped away from Tests and T20Is, leaving ODIs as their only active format. Now, with India preparing for the Australia series, their return after seven months has naturally revived talk about how long they’ll continue. The sole reason why they are still grinding hard in international cricket is to win the ODI World Cup 2027. The duo has never won an ODI World Cup together. Only Kohli did when Rohit wasn’t selected for the ODI World Cup 2011.

When will Rohit, Kohli retire?

Former India coach Ravi Shastri, however, isn’t in favour of drawing any early conclusions. Speaking to Fox Cricket, Shastri said the decision will depend entirely on their motivation and form. While there are concerns if Kohli and Rohit are committed to working through the next 2 years, Shastri laid a simple point. There are concerns over the star duo’s form and fitness, Shastri has opined that the retirement decisions shouldn’t be overcomplicated.

“(Virat Kohli’s) a master chaser, and Rohit is explosive at the top. They feel they’ve got enough cricket in them. It depends how hungry you are, how fit you are, whether that passion for the game is still there,” Shastri said. “I would say take it one series at a time. It’s still a long way to go.”

Both Kohli and Rohit walked away from T20Is after India’s World Cup win in Barbados last year and later announced their retirement from Tests ahead of the England series. The Test retirements shocked the world. It seemed as if the management told them that they won’t be considered just based on their past contributions. The same could be true in the coming future in ODIs too. Shastri believes their ODI exits, whenever they come, will follow a similar path, whether personal or unforced.

“You could see how they left the T20 format when India won the T20 World Cup. Three of them went, (Ravindra) Jadeja, Kohli and Rohit. They were not asked to retire. They went on their own. I would think it’s similar for ODIs. If they’re not enjoying it, if the form is not good, they might pull the plug themselves.”

For now, though, both veterans remain central to India’s ODI plans. Shubman Gill has taken over captaincy, but Rohit and Kohli continue to be the biggest draws. India’s three-match ODI series against the Aussies start from October 19 in Perth. The Men in Blue have landed in Perth and will prepare their best to topple the current ODI World Cup champions.
