The Crimson White has retracted the story “Use of Whippets, other chemical inhalants criminalized in Alabama” after the authenticity of sources could not be verified.
After publication, editors realized that the students quoted in the story were not listed in the UA directory and did not find them on social media.
The author, former staff writer Ethan Krouse, said that the quoted students were real, but that he made up the last names of the interviewees because he forgot to ask students for them.
CW editors were unable to verify Krouse’s account.
The CW generally records interviews using Otter, an automatic transcription service. When asked to send these recordings, Krouse said he had deleted them because he typically deleted Otter recordings a few days after the corresponding story was published.
This story was the only one of his that had sources that The Crimson White was unable to verify.
Out of an abundance of caution, The Crimson White has retracted the story, and Krouse no longer works with the paper.
“I apologize to The Crimson White for the whole affair, but I want to add that everything else I did was legit. I stand by what was in those,” Krouse said. “I didn’t understand the full severity, was fully transparent in questioning and have learned from the mistake.”
