While the buzz at SEC Tipoff 2026 primarily surrounded the upcoming season for men’s and women’s teams across the conference, there was another theme that prevailed throughout the day: growing the game of women’s basketball.
It started out front of the Grand Bohemian Hotel in Birmingham, Alabama, where Crimson Tide players met young female fans, greeting them with love and signing autographs before heading inside for the day’s festivities.
Alabama head coach Kristy Curry touched on her team’s call to action to grow women’s hoops in the state of Alabama during her availability window.
“To continue to grow girls’ basketball across the state, I feel like that’s part of our responsibility,” she said.
Curry also expressed a hope for the greater Tuscaloosa community and Crimson Tide fans to support women’s basketball and the program at Alabama. She talked about the relationships that have been and are continuing to be built within the community and showed an eagerness to grow the program’s fanbase.
“We hope our fan base continues to come out and support,” Curry said. “We’re going to continue to give back, build relationships, never say no for any opportunity to grow that fan base.”
In Georgia head coach Katie Abrahamson-Henderson’s opening statement, the 22-year head coaching veteran brought up the importance of investing in the sport.
“During this era of revenue sharing, it is vital we invest in women’s basketball, not only at the University of Georgia, but in the SEC. We need to keep the SEC very, very strong in women’s basketball.”
Kentucky head coach Kenny Brooks echoed this sentiment and took out a large chunk of time during his window to talk about the SEC’s impact on women’s basketball. He expressed his gratitude to the conference for its support of the growth of the sport.
“Appreciate you guys, your support for women’s basketball as we continue to grow this game,” Brooks said. “This is by far the best conference in the country. We are very happy to be a part of it and try to do our part to help it grow.”
Alabama guard Karly Weathers also said she appreciated the conference and talked about the opportunity to represent her school.
“It’s been incredible just to see this side of the SEC,” Weathers said. “I have been playing in the SEC for four years, so just getting the opportunity to represent the University of Alabama here has been absolutely incredible, and I am so thankful for the experience.”
