Fitter and Faster Swim Camps is the proud sponsor of SwimSwam’s College Recruiting Channel and all commitment news. For many, swimming in college is a lifelong dream that is pursued with dedication and determination. Fitter and Faster is proud to honor these athletes and those who supported them on their journey.

Brayden Capen from Lisle, Illinois, has announced his intention to swim and study at the University of Tennessee beginning in the 2027-28 school year.

“I am extremely honored to announce my commitment to continue my academic and athletic career at the University of Tennessee! I sincerely want to thank Coaches Matt, Caleb, Rich, and Rob for giving me this opportunity! I also would like to thank my family, friends, coaches, and everyone that helped me through this entire process! GO VOLS!!!”

Capen is a flexible fly/back/IM specialist whom we ranked #14 on our Way Too Early list of top boys swimming recruits in the high school class of 2027. He hands the Vols their third top 20 verbal commitment after #4 Collin Holgerson and #7 Hayden Vicknair.

Capen swims for the Academy Bullets Swim Club and Marmion Academy. He is a versatile talent who put up impressive performances in the 200/400 IM and 200 back last year (he owns the fastest LCM 200 back time in the cohort).

At the Illinois High School Boys’ State Championships, he was runner-up in the 200 IM (1:47.31) and placed 3rd in the 500 free (4:27.34) as a sophomore. He clocked PBs in both events (1:47.01/4:26.60) in prelims. A few weeks later, he competed at NCSA Spring Championships and lowered his lifetime bests in the 100 free (46.23), 1650 free (15:36.88), 50 back (22.72), 100 back (48.47), 200 back (1:43.89), 200 fly (1:49.50), and 400 IM (3:49.38). He was an ‘A’ finalist in the 100/200 back and 200/400 IM.

Capen hit the ground running in long-course season, starting at U.S. Nationals, where he placed 17th in the 200 back and 18th in the 400 IM. He earned PBs in the 50 back (26.52), 200 back (1:59.84), and 400 IM (4:23.12), dropping 2.5 seconds in the 200 back and 8.6 in the 400 IM. He was named to the USA Swimming’s team for World Junior Championships, where he competed in the 400 IM.

Before leaving for Romania, he wrapped up the long-course season at NCSA Summer Championships. There, he won the 200 back and 400 IM and finished 2nd in the 50 back, 3rd in the 100 back, and 4th in the 200 IM. He finished with new times in the 50 back (26.21), 100 back (56.45), 200 back (1:59.02), 200 IM (2:03.14), and 400 IM (4:21.21).

At only 16 years old, Capen is not all that far out of scoring range at the conference level. It took 46.75/1:42.96 in the backstroke, 1:44.91/3:47.63 in the IM, and 4:18.24 in the 500 free to score at the 2025 SEC Championships.

Best SCY times:

100 back – 48.47 200 back – 1:43.89 200 IM – 1:47.01 400 IM – 3:49.38 500 free – 4:26.60
