PENFIELD, N.Y. – Last month marked the second driest September on record in our area. The rain for this month is still well below average. So, is the apple harvest being impacted by the lack of rain?
A viewer named Robert wrote to News10NBC asking: “Is the drought at this point in the season affecting any of the local harvests for this year?”
For answers, we went to Christine Worth, director of tourism for Wayne County, which produces more apples than any other county in New York State.
“In farming, in general, the drought has been a concern,” Worth said. “Every year there’s something. So it could be a frost, it could be a drought, so we’re glad to be out there, we’re glad to see the apples on the trees.”
There are still plenty of apples on the trees at Schutt’s Apple Mill in Webster. The staff there told News10NBC’s Emily Putnam that the dry weather had very little effect on their trees this year. In fact, they say this was one of their best years ever.
The rain they did have came right when it needed to, and an irrigation system also helped. Irrigation systems were key for many local farms dealing with the drought.
At Wickham Farms in Penfield, it was the same situation. The dry weather had no impact on the apples, and an irrigation system helped create a delicious, bountiful harvest. At Bauman’s Farm Market, an employee said the trees are in good shape for the holiday season.
