Holly had been playing music since childhood, teaching himself guitar and performing country songs with his friend Bob Montgomery. By 1955, he was still searching for his big break while working part-time at Panhandle Steel Products and attending Lubbock High School.

Buddy Holly's Path to Stardom Started With Elvis Presley
For Holly, the Decca contract marked the beginning of a journey that would transform rock and roll. In February 1957, he returned to the studio in Clovis, New Mexico, with a new band called The Crickets.
The timing of Holly's encounter with Elvis was significant. Elvis himself was on the verge of superstardom. Born in Tupelo, Mississippi, in 1935, Elvis had started with Sun Records in Memphis just a year earlier. His recording contract would be sold to RCA Victor by late 1955, and by 1956, he would become an international sensation.

That decision proved golden. On May 27, 1957, the Crickets released "That'll Be the Day," backed with "I'm Looking for Someone to Love." The record climbed to No. 3 on the pop charts and No. 2 on the rhythm-and-blues charts. Holly's distinctive vocal style—incorporating hiccups, wide vocal range and playful delivery—set him apart from other performers.
