ROCHESTER, N.Y. — Nearly $80 million in state funding is going to help expand zero-emission vehicles across the state.

Back in Dec. 2024, Gov. Kathy Hochul announced $100 million in state funding was available through the Zero-Emission Transit Transition Program (ZETT) to help transit providers expand their use of zero-emission vehicles.

Non-MTA transit providers were encouraged to apply for the funding.

Of the funding, RTS is set to get $17.5 million, which will go towards the purchase of ten hydrogen-electric/fuel-cell buses and to utility and safety improvements to the operations building to help accommodate the buses.

RTS was one of the first transit agencies in the state to start the switch to electric buses. The problem is, the buses haven’t worked out all that great in this area with our climate, so they switched to hydrogen fuel cell buses.

Back in March, the CEO of RTS asked for a 15% increase in transit funding in the new state budget.
