Denver Broncos, Nik Bonitto on pace for NFL single-season sack records ...Middle East

Sport by : (Mile High Sports) -

The Denver Broncos and Nik Bonitto are on pace for NFL records.

It’s no secret: The Broncos are the best team at getting after the quarterback in the NFL.

Fresh off an incredible nine-sack day of Justin Fields, Denver’s reaching new heights in that stat department.

Denver Broncos, Nik Bonitto on pace for NFL records

Nik Bonitto currently leads the NFL with 8.0 sacks, and the Broncos lead the league with 30; each are record-breaking paces.

“Casa” Bonitto has been incredible the last two years. He now has 21.5 sacks dating back to last season. Only Trey Hendrickson of the Bengals, who led the league last year with 17.5 sacks, has as many as Bonitto with exactly 21.5.

The emerging Broncos star is currently on pace for an insane 23 sacks, which would give him the new NFL single-season record.

Both Michael Strahan (2001) and T.J. Watt (2021) share the record with 22.5 sacks in a single year. Not only that, but Bonitto’s pace would obviously be a Denver Broncos single-season record, passing Von Miller’s 18.5 sacks in 2012.

Bonitto is special, a generational talent at EDGE much like Miller was in Denver for a decade. The 26-year old has the speed to get around the edge like Miller did, and utilizes multiple moves against opposing tackles, too.

He also scored twice last year; one a pick-6, one a fumble-6. Miller once had a 60-yard fumble-6 himself.

Bonitto it tied for an NFL-leading 16 QB hits with Zach Allen, and the EDGE is playing so well he’s now the favorite for Defensive Player of the Year.

Currently, Bonitto’s 31.0 sacks are 16th in Broncos history. If he stays on his current pace, he’ll be in the top-10 in team history by the end of the year.

Broncos on pace for 85 sacks

All together, the Denver Broncos are on pace for a would-be NFL-record 85 sacks.

The current record is held by the 1984 Chicago Bears with 72 sacks. They averaged a crazy 4.5 sacks per game. The Broncos are averaging 5 per contest.

The nine sacks on Justin Fields of the Jets last Sunday in London were the most by the team since 1996, and second-most in a single game dating back to 1969 (10). But, the nine sacks were tied for the most in a game since joining the NFL in 1970.

We know the Denver Broncos leader is Nik Bonitto, and fellow EDGE Jonathon Cooper (4.5) is second.

Here’s a quick look at the Broncos sack leaders:

Nik Bonitto, 8.0 Jonathon Cooper, 4.5 Justin Strnad, 3.5 John Franklin-Myers, 3.0 Zach Allen, 2.5 Tied, Ja’Quan McMillian, Eyioma Uwazurike, 2.0

All of the sacks are a great, sexy stat. But they’re more important than that.

Denver’s defense is leading this team much the same way it did last season, all the way into the postseason.

Disrupting the quarterback’s timing and play is not only keeping opponents off the field, it’s propping up a struggling offense.

This week, the Broncos (4-2) face the New York Giants (2-4) and new starter Jaxson Dart. Dart has shown an ability to escape the pocket and make plays with his legs, but he’s also taking sacks. He’s been sacked 8 times in only three starts, or 2.7 per game. That’s among the bottom-10 QBs.

So, Denver’s pass rush could feast again this week.

Broncos on personal record pace:

Jonathon Cooper on pace for 13 sacks. Justin Strnad’s 3.5 sacks are already a career-high. John Franklin-Myers on pace for 8.5 sacks. Both Bonitto and Allen are on pace for 45 QB Hits.
