Cardinals’ Jonathan Gannon not mulling over Colts game, standing by Kyler Murray as QB1 ...Middle East

Sport by : (Arizona sports) -

Monday is typically the day to analyze game film and mull over necessary adjustments, win or lose, but especially for a Arizona Cardinals team with their backup quarterback taking the offense to new heights.

But for coach Jonathan Gannon, the stand-up job by Jacoby Brissett on Sunday in a one-score loss at the Colts didn’t change his mind about Kyler Murray as his QB1 immediately following the game, and he didn’t budge roughly 24 hours later, either.

“I thought we attacked where we needed to attack,” Gannon told Arizona Sports’ Burns & Gambo on Monday. “I get the question, but when Kyler is healthy enough to play, he’ll play.”

Cardinals coach Jonathan Gannon commended Jacoby Brissett for how he held up against a good Colts team, but told @BurnsAndGambo he isn’t wavering on Kyler Murray being his starting QB.

As to when Murray will be “healthy enough” to return to the starting position, Gannon said the team is taking his foot injury “day by day” while also citing that Murray was given until Saturday to possibly give it a go in Indianapolis.

NFL’s Ian Rapoport had previously reported that the Arizona signal caller has a “mid-foot sprain” that has a chance of keeping him sidelined for “more than this week.”

How different was the Cardinals’ offense under Brissett?

It reached 400 total yards for the first time in the 2025 season and had its most points (27) through six games.

Specifically comparing Brissett to Murray, the former’s 320 passing yards and two touchdowns through the air were something the latter hasn’t thrown for since Oct. 30, 2022. Brissett also averaged 7.3 yards per pass attempt while Murray has averaged six yards with two games below five.

Brissett did toss 44 balls — three more than Murray’s most this season against the Seahawks on Sept. 25 — but completed as many passes of 20 or more yards (seven) as Murray has in 161 tries.

A season-high eight Arizona players caught at least one pass against the Colts, in part due to wide receiver Marvin Harrison Jr. being ruled out early with a concussion, but tight end Trey McBride and wideouts Michael Wilson and Zay Jones all established season highs for receptions as well.

With all this mind, Gannon recognized that some desire change but he isn’t ready to give the keys over to Brissett.

“I’m always going to do what’s best for the team, guys, so what I think that is, that’s what we’re going to do,” Gannon said. “I thought Jacoby would play well. He’s a vet that’s operated at a high level. I’ve played with him as our starting quarterback before in Indy (when I was defensive coordinator) in 2019. So, when we signed him, we knew what we were getting.

“Ultimately, all 11 guys on offense, the offense play(ed) a little bit better than we played.”

Gannon on offensive line with Will Hernandez firmly back in fold

After getting his feet wet with 23 snaps against the Tennessee Titans, according to PFF, offensive lineman Will Hernandez saw all 73 possible snaps in Indianapolis as he continues to put a torn left ACL behind him.

His presence has been a welcome one, but Gannon said the O-line as a whole unit is still struggling to establish what the Cardinals want to be a strength: the running game. Arizona rushers averaged 3.7 yards per carry on Sunday on 24 attempts.

“We’re still searching for that explosive run, but I thought we were pretty efficient for most of the day,” Gannon said. “I thought the plan, we were doing a couple of different things in protection with different groups and things like that, and I thought they held up well.

“I’m always going to want our bigs to control the line of scrimmage better.”

In the penalty department, the offensive line was nailed with two yellow flags, as Hernandez was hit with one of those for a false start.

Explosive runs of 10 or more yards, as defined by PFF, were nearly nonexistent for the Cardinals against the Colts defense as Michael Carter was the only running back (Bam Knight and Emari Demercado the others) with an explosive run. Brissett managed 12 yards on one of his three scampers.

Arizona (2-4) has only the Green Bay Packers (3-1-1) in front of them at home to see how it can improve upon lacking areas before a bye in Week 8.
