MACEDON, N.Y. – The Greater Rochester Soap Box Derby has a permanent home for the first time in 30 years. The new building on Quaker Road in Macedon opened Monday.
The facility houses all the cars, equipment, and tools. It also serves as a space where racers can team up and work together in this collaborative sport.
“For 20 years it was in my house,” said Mark Scuderi, race director of the Soap Box Derby. “Last ten years, it’s been in warehouses causing us to move equipment, cars, racks, weights, everything, every year or two. So we now have our own home for everything, and it’s going to be here coming up for next generation of kids coming up through the soap box derby in Rochester.
“It brings back a lot of memories for me,” said Mayor Evans. “When I was a kid always wanted to do a soapbox derby. I didn’t do it when I was really young, I did mine as a teenager and I drove in a Kodak car. And you know, I still have fond memories of it. My kids now ride in the soap box derby.”
Waste Management donated the land for the new building. Since 1934, Rochester has produced 18 world champions.
