Sport by : (GreeleyTribune) -

The autumn weather is starting to cool down, but the local fall high school prep action remains red hot — even as numerous sports begin to reach a finale.

Here’s a look at some of the standout local athletes and key moments from this past week:

Athletes of the week

Amaya Cron, Greeley West softball

Cron, a freshman pitcher, stepped up big in Greeley West’s dominant 17-0 three-inning win against crosstown rival Greeley Central on Oct. 6. She faced just one batter more than the minimum, allowing no hits, while striking out six and walking two. She also hit 1 for 2 at the plate with three RBI and two runs.

Jesus De La Cruz, Northridge football

De La Cruz, a senior, picked a fine time to earn the first 100-yard game of his high school career. He carried the ball 13 times for 108 yards and two touchdowns in Northridge’s 24-20 win against crosstown rival Greeley Central on Friday at District 6 Stadium.

Bergen Duarte, University softball

Duarte, a sophomore, was swinging the bat with purpose in the Bulldogs’ 11-1 home win against Resurrection Christian on Oct. 7. She hit 3 for 3 with three doubles and three RBI.

Scot Francis, Briggsdale football

Francis produced one big play after another in the Falcons’ 58-20 home win against North Park on Saturday. He racked up 195 rushing yards and two touchdowns on just 11 carries, averaging 17.7 yards per carry.

Johanna Galvan, Eaton softball

Galvan, a multi-faceted junior, dominated in all areas of the Reds’ 15-0 three-inning road win against Weld Central on Oct. 7. In the pitchers’ circle, she was nearly perfect, allowing no runs, no hits and no walks, while striking out seven, in four innings. Weld Central’s only baserunner came via an error. At the plate, Galvan hit 3 for 3 with two RBI, a double and a triple.

Diego Guzman, Greeley Central boys soccer

Guzman, a senior, was a scoring machine for the Wildcats this past week. He had four goals in Greeley Central’s 8-0 home win against Mountain View on Oct. 6. Three days later, he produced one more goal to go with two assists in a 3-0 road win against Berthoud. The Wildcats improved to 11-0-1 overall, 4-0-1 in Class 4A/3A Longs Peak League play with those two wins.

Elijah Martin, Dayspring Christian football

Martin, a senior, turned the Eagles’ 50-6 road win against Merino on Saturday into a track meet. He recorded 189 yards and two touchdowns on 15 carries.

Paige Michaelson, Resurrection Christian girls volleyball

Michaelson, a freshman, showed poise beyond her years in a high-pressure, high-energy 3-2 home win against fellow contender University on Oct. 7. She recorded team-highs of 21 kills and three aces, with a .378 hitting percentage. With this win, and a 3-0 victory against Weld Central two days later, the Cougars remained undefeated, 14-0 overall, 8-0 in 4A/3A/2A Patriot League play.

Collin Roys, Windsor Charter boys soccer

Roys, a sophomore, caught fire in the Windsor Charter’s 10-1 win against Valley on Thursday. He had five of the team’s 10 goals.

Britton Walston, Resurrection Christian football

Walston, a senior running back, was electric in the Cougars’ dominant 34-7 home win against Eaton on Friday. He carried the ball 21 times for 150 yards and three touchdowns. He single-handedly produced more than twice as many rushing yards as the Reds’ normally strong rushing attack. He also caught five passes for 74 yards.

Game of the week

Greeley West’s softball team appears to be heating up at just the right time. The Spartans earned one of their most impressive wins of the season Wednesday, as they defeated Roosevelt in walk-off fashion, 6-5 in eight innings. West led early before the Rough Riders clawed back to briefly take a 5-4 lead in the top of the seventh. The Spartans scored in the bottom of the seventh to force an extra inning before coming through clutch again in the bottom of the eighth. West senior Madison DeVault led the way, hitting 2 for 3 with two RBI and a double.

The Spartans won four of five games to end the regular season. With a 13-10 overall record, they will be the 27th seed in the 32-team 5A postseason. They will face No. 6 Legend (18-5) in the first round of regional play this weekend.

Moment of the week

Though neither team can make the claim of being the “Kings of the City” — Greeley West went 2-0 against both its crosstown rivals this fall — Northridge earned a split against its crosstown football foes with a 24-20 win against Greeley Central on Friday. That win snapped the Grizzlies’ three-game losing streak and allowed Northridge to improve to 2-4 overall, 1-0 in 3A North 2 Conference play.

Statistic of the week

The Greeley Central boys soccer team has been utterly dominant this fall. With a couple more shutout victories against Mountain View and Berthoud this past week, the Wildcats improved to 11-0-1 overall and have none outscored their opponents by a combined 48-6.
