Free dementia-support training offered in Berthoud on Saturday ...Saudi Arabia

Sport by : (GreeleyTribune) -

Dementia Together, a Northern Colorado nonprofit that supports people living with dementia and their care partners, will host a free training Saturday in Berthoud for friends, family and anyone interested in learning about how to support people with dementia.

The educational symposium “Living Well with Dementia” runs from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. and will be held at Grace Place church, at 375 Meadowlark Drive. Another free symposium will be held Oct. 30 at the Eaton Evangelical Free Church, 1325 Third St. in Eaton.

“Being able to have the skills and communication strategies to welcome them (someone with a cognitive impairment) into a conversation and to be able to make them feel at ease and comfortable and not wanting to self isolate or be socially isolated helps bring more people together,” said Claire Richardson, outreach and resource development manager at Dementia Together.

She added that attendees can expect to learn about the SPECAL method, cognitive impairments, and how to support someone around them with dementia. The SPECAL method is a disability management system for care partners and those living with dementia that includes avoiding direct questions, listening to the person with dementia and not contradicting them. The training is designed for friends and family care partners, not senior care professionals, Richardson said, adding that Dementia Together hosts a separate event for senior care. Loveland Fire Rescue Authority recently went through a Dementia Together training, and the staff is now considered “dementia friendly” by the organization.

Both symposiums are sponsored by the McKee Wellness Foundation, Senior Helpers and ComForCare, among others, Richardson said, adding that they were instrumental in making the event free and accessible for the community.

“As we age, (with) more health services that we need, it can become more and more costly, and with dementia care, that adds another layer of costs that go into it,” Richardson said. “Having Dementia Together as a resource that is no-charge education, enrichment and support services is a huge benefit and prevents that barrier.”

Registration for the all-day event is required in advance and can be found online at dementiatogether.org/educational-symposium/. Anyone is welcome to join, including those under 18 who are interested in learning. Breakfast snacks, coffee and lunch will be provided for participants. Although the event is free, Dementia Together is encouraging a $25 donation. Those with questions can email help@dementiatogether.org.
