Rams WR Puka Nacua day-to-day after suffering ankle sprain ...Middle East

News by : (The Orange County Register) -

The Rams (4-2) got some good news on Monday, as wide receiver Puka Nacua’s ankle sprain is not considered long-term and he will have a chance to play against the Jacksonville Jaguars (4-2) in London next weekend, head coach Sean McVay told reporters over Zoom.

Nacua suffered the ankle injury in the first quarter of the Rams’ 17-3 win over the Ravens on Sunday. He was able to return for a handful of snaps in the second half, but was largely used in a reserve role.

While McVay said the Rams medical team was “encouraged” by the scans on Nacua’s left ankle, he still described the receiver — who still leads the NFL in receptions despite just two against the Ravens — as “day-to-day” and said the team is unsure if he will play against the Jaguars.

“There is nothing on the scan that looks like it’s going to be long-term,” McVay told reporters. “The uncertainty of this week is a real thing. The bye has nothing to do with our approach on that.”

McVay also said that backup running back Blake Corum is day-to-day after injuring his ankle against the Ravens. The Rams remain hopeful that Corum will be able to play in London, as well.

Wide receiver Tutu Atwell, who missed the Ravens game with a hamstring injury suffered in practice last week, is expected to be able to play against Jacksonville, McVay said.

Avila returns

After a four-week absence from the starting lineup due to an ankle sprain, Rams left guard Steve Avila made his return on offense against the Ravens. It was a relief for the third-year guard, who also spent time on injured reserve last season with a knee injury.

“It felt good, man, it felt good,” Avila said. “There’s a lot of things that happen on the field that you can’t control. I think that happened to me Week 1, but I feel like I had a good mindset about the situation I was in. So I feel like situations like this build character and I was trusting in everybody. And it felt good to be back out there.”

Avila had been active the past two games, but in a reserve role as Justin Dedich filled in for him at left guard. The coaching and training staff preached patience with Avila in this time, trying to keep the bigger picture in mind.

“It’s a long season, and we really expect this team to go pretty far in the playoffs,” Avila said. “They just wanted to make sure I was 100% before I stepped back out on the field.”

Avila did not allow a pressure of quarterback Matthew Stafford against the Ravens while playing every offensive snap against the Ravens.
