Sofie Vanyo from Charlottesville, Virginia, has announced her verbal commitment to the University of North Carolina for 2027-28 and beyond.
“I am so blessed and excited to announce my verbal commitment to continue my academic and athletic career at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill! I want to express my gratitude to my family, Coach Jeremy, teammates, and friends for their endless support through this process. I must also thank Coach Mark Gangloff and the rest of the UNC coaching staff for giving me this incredible opportunity. GO HEELS!!!”
Vanyo attends Monticello High School. As a sophomore last season, she won the 100 free (50.39) and was runner-up in the 200 IM (2:00.95) at the 2025 VHSL Class 3 State Championships. She earned PBs in both events, as well as the 50 back (26.64) leading off the Monticello medley relay.
In club swimming, where she represents Atlantic Coast Athletic Clubs of VA, she has achieved Summer Nationals cuts in the 200 free and 200 IM, Summer Juniors standards in the 400 free, 50 fly, 200 breast, and 400 IM, and Winter Juniors standards in the 50 free and 100 free. We named her to the “Best of the Rest” section on our Way Too Early list of top girls swimming recruits from the high school class of 2027.
Following the 2024-25 high school season, Vanyo competed at Virginia Swimming LSC’s Short Course Senior Championships, where she won the 200 breast and came in 4th in the 50 free, 3rd in the 100 free, 3rd in the 200 free, 3rd in the 100 breast, and 4th in the 200 IM. She left the meet with updated times in the 50 free (23.29), 100 free (50.10), 200 free (1:49.36), and 200 breast (2:15.23).
Vanyo kicked off long-course season at Richmond Sectional with ‘A’ final finishes in all her events (50/100/200 free, 100 breast, and 200/400 IM). She concluded the summer at Junior Nationals, where she hit new PBs in the 200 free (2:02.98), 50 fly (28.34), 100 fly (1:02.83), 200 IM (2:17.64), 400 IM (4:54.80). She finished 11th in the 200 IM, 13th in the 200 free, and 27th in the 400 IM.
It took 1:58.69/4:16.30 in the IMs, 22.41/48.72/1:46.56 in the free, and 1:02.13/2:13.21 in the breast to score at ACCs last season.

Her mother, Svetlana, competed for Russia in swimming in the 1996 Olympics and her father, Brian, played basketball for the U.S. Naval Academy. Svetlana and Athena both teach/coach at Atlantic Coast Athletic Clubs.
Vanyo will join “BOTR” Maren Byrne, Maddy Boland, Maren Berg, and Sloane Barr in the Tar Heels’ class of 2031.
