WATCH: A Fight Breaks Out at the End of Chiefs-Lions Sunday Night Football Game ...Middle East

Sport by : (Bleacher Nation) -

In a final attempt to fully recharge the batteries ahead of the Bears-Commanders Monday Night Football game, I decided not to tune into the Sunday Night Football game between the Chiefs and Lions. And if you didn’t lock in either, you missed some post-game shenanigans with Lions safety Brian Branch throwing punches as time was expiring on the game clock.

This is absurd:

Reading stuff at ESPN, Pro Football Talk, and CBS Sports provides an all-encompassing roundup of the post-game brouhaha between the Chiefs and Lions. And if you are looking to kill some time between now and when the Bears and Commanders kick off on Monday Night Football, checking in on this scenario feels like a good way to pass the time.

Lions and Chiefs fight at the end of Sunday Night Football

The fight seems to begin after Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes took his final kneel-down, with the NBC broadcast showing Lions safety Brian Branch crossing the line of scrimmage and refusing to shake Mahomes’ hand. That was followed by Branch and Chiefs receiver JuJu Smith-Schuster having an exchange before Branch threw an open-hand punch at Smith-Schuster’s face.

For what it’s worth, Branch said what he did was “childish.” And you’ll get no argument from me on that one. There are few things as silly as throwing a punch at someone wearing a football helmet. Meanwhile, Lions Head Coach Dan Campbell called the incident “inexcusable.” In the end, leave it to Mahomes to deliver the best bars, telling NBC sideline reporter Melissa Stark: “We play the game in between the whistles. They can do all the extra-curricular stuff they want to do. But we thought we played a great game today, and we’ll keep this momentum moving forward.”

Getting sonned by Patrick Mahomes in a post-game interview has to be one of the most embarrassing things that can happen to you. Sheesh.

The folks at PFT noted that Lions safety Brian Branch has racked up more than $100,000 worth of fines in his first three years in the league. After his actions at the conclusion of Sunday Night Football, Branch will probably need to have his checkbook ready because that total is likely to go up once again.

I suppose you can’t rule out a suspension when it comes to an incident like this. After all, Bears fans are familiar with Javon Wims getting suspended for two games in 2020 for throwing a punch at Saints defensive back Chauncey Gardner-Johnson. With that in mind, it is worth pointing out that Detroit’s next two games are against a potential Super Bowl contender (vs. Bucs on MNF in Week 7) and a divisional showdown against the Vikings in Week 9 after the bye. Just add it to the list of NFL things to keep an eye on as this season moves along.

Detroit Lions head coach Dan Campbell, right, talks to Kansas City Chiefs head coach Andy Reid after 30-17 loss at Arrowhead Stadium in Kansas City, Missouri on Sunday, Oct. 12, 2025.
