Syrian Transitional President Ahmed al-Sharaa chaired on Sunday, October 12, a broad government meeting that included ministers, heads of public agencies, and governors to discuss the latest political, security, and military developments, and to review what participating ministers described as “achievements” across various sectors, according to the state-run Syrian Arab News Agency (SANA).

Foreign Minister Asaad Hassan al-Shibani said Syria had transformed “from a country once viewed with pity into a national success story,” noting that President al-Sharaa’s repeated participation in international summits and forums had “enhanced Syria’s regional and international standing.”

Al-Shibani added that his ministry had made “tangible progress” in the sanctions file through a “balanced diplomacy plan” and by signing agreements and memoranda of understanding with countries that previously had no official contact with Damascus, highlighting the development of relations with China and the “activation of Syria’s membership in Mediterranean states.”

Regarding relations with the United States, the minister noted a “gradual improvement,” emphasizing the need to capitalize on international openness to support reconstruction efforts. He also mentioned “resolving several consular issues” and the readiness of some countries to send new ambassadors to Damascus.

Al-Shibani explained that “the Suwayda file has been brought back into the national framework,” reinforcing internal unity, as he put it.

Interior Minister Anas Khattab said his ministry had managed to “maintain relative calm” in Suwayda (southern Syria).

He noted that the ministry had issued more than 450,000 passports recently and lifted over five million travel bans. Khattab added that drug smuggling operations had dropped by 90% thanks to coordination with relevant bodies, alongside the opening of a complaints center in Damascus and plans to establish four more across the provinces.

Defense Minister Major General Marhaf Abu Qasra underlined “the importance of military educational institutions in training personnel and strengthening defense readiness.” At the same time, Minister of Emergencies and Disaster Management Raed al-Saleh reviewed his ministry’s performance in addressing fires and natural disasters, stressing the preparedness of rapid response teams.

Governors and heads of public institutions also presented reports on “achievements” in their sectors and the challenges facing service and development work. The director of the Syrian Development Fund, Safwat Raslan, discussed the distribution of financial resources based on criteria considering the level of damage and population size in each province.

The meeting concluded with directives from President al-Sharaa, who emphasized the importance of “enhancing coordination among state institutions and integrating government efforts to serve citizens and support national development,” according to the official agency.

When was the Syrian government formed?

President Ahmed al-Sharaa announced the formation of the new Syrian government on March 30, about four months after the downfall of the ousted president, Bashar al-Assad’s regime.

During the announcement ceremony, al-Sharaa said Syria was witnessing “the birth of a new stage in its national journey,” noting that the country faces “major challenges that require unity and cohesion.”

He added that forming the new government reflects a shared will to build a new state that will rebuild national institutions on principles of accountability and transparency, open new horizons in education and health, and “prevent corruption from infiltrating institutions.”

The president emphasized that the government’s plan will focus on preserving and developing human resources, rehabilitating industry, protecting domestic production, fostering an investment-friendly environment across all sectors, reforming monetary policy, strengthening the Syrian pound, and preventing manipulation of its value.

Al-Sharaa also highlighted the importance of protecting citizens and reinforcing stability, adding that a new ministry dedicated to sports and youth had been established to reflect the crucial role of young people.
