Texas A&M (6-0, 3-0 SEC) is the No. 6 team in the country and poised for a College Football Playoff berth. Meanwhile, Arkansas (2-4, 0-2 SEC) hasn’t beaten a Power 4 team and fired head coach Sam Pittman at the end of September.
This contest kicks off a stretch of 3 straight road games for Texas A&M and 3 consecutive home dates for the Razorbacks. Both head coaches are unbeaten against the other’s respective school in this matchup. Mike Elko (1-0) picked up a 21-17 victory last season for the Aggies. Bobby Petrino, Arkansas’s interim coach, went 3-0 against Texas A&M from 2009-11, when he was the team’s official head coach.
If Petrino were to knock off the Aggies this Saturday, he’d have a great claim for the full-time gig once again. Unfortunately for him, ESPN’s Football Power Index doesn’t see it happening. FPI gives the Aggies a 70.0% chance of prevailing over the Razorbacks for the 13th time in 14 meetings.
Outside of a 56-13 shellacking from Notre Dame, the Razorbacks have been a competitive bunch. Their other 3 losses have come by a combined 10 points. The heartbreak that Arkansas’s fanbase felt after each of those defeats is a familiar feeling from recent matchups with the Aggies, who controlled this series in recent years.
