Revenge is sweet.
Rico Dowdle has just achieved something that only two other running back have done in the last decade.
Panthers RB Rico Dowdle recorded his second straight 200-plus scrimmage yards gameGettyThe Carolina Panthers RB became the first player since Dalvin Cook in 2020 to record 200-plus total scrimmage yards in back-to-back games.
But what makes this extra rewarding for the 27-year-old is that he did so in his ‘revenge game’ against the Dallas Cowboys – the team he called home for the first four seasons of his NFL career.
Having exploded for a career-high 206 rushing yards and a touchdown, and an additional 28 receiving yards in the Panthers’ 27-24 victory over the Miami Dolphins in Week 5, Dowdle told the Cowboys to be wary ahead of their meeting on Sunday.
“They got to buckle up,” Dowdle said of the Cowboys after the Panthers’ win against Miami, via ESPN. “I think they know for sure. They didn’t keep me there for five years for no reason.”
The NFC’s offensive player of the week reiterated his previous comments on Wednesday, where he said: “Yeah, they have to buckle up, [I] stand on that.
“That was just meaning it’s going to be a very physical game from my end. I know from my end, I take a lot of pride in that: buckling the chinstraps up tight, and I will be coming.”
They didn’t listen. With a defense that no longer has superstar Micah Parsons, Dowdle inflicted some serious damage on his former team, going for 239 total yards – 183 yards of which came on the ground – and a receiving touchdown in a 30-27 victory over America’s Team.
Having notched back-to-back 200-plus-yard games, Dowdle becomes just the third back since 2016 to achieve the feat, joining Cook (2020) – the older brother of Buffalo Bills back James Cook – and Jay Ajayi (2016).
Dowdle exploits Dallas’ defense in ‘revenge game’
Dowdle was out to prove that the Cowboys should have re-signed him in the off-season after a breakout 2024 campaign in which he rushed for 1,079 yards and added an additional 249 yards in the air for five total touchdowns.
This saw him become the first undrafted player in Cowboys history to rush for over 1,000 yards in a single season.
Dowdle exposed the Cowboys’ defensive struggles, with the team allowing 400-plus scrimmage yardsGetty Dowdle had the last laugh over Jerry Jones after dropping over 200 scrimmage yards on his former team, just months after Jones didn’t make an offer to re-sign himHowever, owner Jerry Jones didn’t make him an offer, opting to sign Javonte Williams – two years Dowdle’s junior – to be in the backfield with quarterback Dak Prescott instead, and so he departed for the Panthers on a one-year, $2.75 million deal.
That contract now looks to be an absolute steal for Carolina, who lost their starting back Chuba Hubbard to injury in Week 4’s defeat to the New England Patriots.
When Jones made the bold decision to trade star pass rusher Parsons to the Green Bay Packers in exchange for defensive tackle Kenny Clark and two first-round draft picks, the 82-year-old insisted that the Cowboys defense would be “a better team than we have the last several years.”
He suggested that Parsons was weak against the run. So far, though, the Cowboys’ defense has gone from bad to worse, allowing 410 total yards, including 216 on the ground.
This marks the sixth consecutive game in which they have allowed 300-plus yards, and is the fourth time in which they have given up over 144 yards rushing on the season.
But Cowboys head coach Brian Schottenheimer is adamant that defensive coordinator Matt Eberflus can turn things around.
It was all smiles for the Panthers as they climb to 3-3 on the seasonGetty“Matt’s a great coach,” Schottenheimer said after Sunday’s loss in Carolina. “Everywhere he’s ever been he’s had good defenses.
“It’s not just Matt by himself. Matt’s trying. The players are trying. This is not a lack of effort.”
The Cowboys now fall to 2-3-1 on the season, and sit third in the NFC East behind reigning Super Bowl champions Philadelphia Eagles (4-2) and the Washington Commanders (3-2), whom they will next face in a divisional match-up.
