The University of Northern Colorado football team scored its biggest win of the Ed Lamb era Saturday afternoon.
The Bears beat nationally ranked Idaho 49-33, spoiling the Vandals’ homecoming game by scoring the most points under their third-year head coach at the Kibbie Dome in Moscow, Idaho.
Idaho (2-4, 0-2 Big Sky) came into the Big Sky Conference game ranked 11th and 13th in Football Championship Subdivision polls last week. The Vandals, though, played without starting quarterback Joshua Wood, a talented, dual-threat transfer from Fresno State. UNC took advantage, scoring on its first four possessions of the game to build a 35-17 halftime lead.
UNC had never scored more than 26 points in its previous 28 games with Lamb as the head coach. He was hired in December 2022 to replace Ed McCaffrey.
UNC (3-3, 1-1 Big Sky) beat Houston Christian 26-18 in overtime earlier this season.
The win was Lamb’s fourth as head coach and second in the Big Sky Conference. The Bears won on the road last year at Weber State after finishing 0-11 in Lamb’s first season in 2023.
The Bears racked up nearly 500 yards of total offense, while also giving up almost 500 to the Vandals. Idaho had 440 yards of total offense with 203 of those on the ground.
Quarterback Eric Gibson Jr. was 22-of-34 passing for 350 yards and two touchdowns. He threw for at least 300 yards for the third time in five starts at UNC. Gibson Jr. transferred from junior college earlier this year.

Also heavily involved was Carver Cheeks, who caught nine passes for 120 yards. He scored a touchdown on a 13-yard reverse run for a 42-25 lead late in the fourth quarter.
Gibson Jr., who threw for 397 yards two weeks ago in a loss against Idaho State, wasted no time getting the Bears on the board. They scored on the opening possession of the game when Gibson Jr. connected with running back Mathias Price from 7 yards out. Price also scored on a 1-yard run in the first half.
The Bears totaled 132 yards on the ground, with three guys rushing for at least 30 yards.
Defense set up two UNC scores in the first half. Defensive back Darrell Bryant Jr. picked off a Jack Wagner pass on the Vandals’ first play from scrimmage, setting up a 52-yard field goal from Jacob Willig for a 10-0 lead.
Late in the second quarter, Severance High School graduate Dominic Butts came up with a sack of Wagner. Butts forced Wagner to fumble on the play, and the defensive lineman recovered the ball.
Five plays later, Gibson Jr. and Munroe connected on the Bears’ third touchdown for a 28-17 lead.
Wagner started in Wood’s place, going 21-for-33 passing for 237 yards and two interceptions. The Vandals also used Rocco Koch at quarterback, and he led the rushing attack with 81 yards on 10 carries and two touchdowns.
