An Israeli army patrol detained five civilians from the village of Saida al-Hanout in southern Quneitra (southern Syria) on Thursday, October 10, including two shepherds and three farmers, near the ceasefire line in the area.
Activist Ahmad Abu al-Zein from Quneitra told Enab Baladi that an Israeli patrol consisting of three vehicles stopped two shepherds who were grazing their sheep near the border strip west of Saida al-Hanout.
He added that the patrol also detained three farmers who were driving past the area, about 300 meters from a United Nations Disengagement Observer Force (UNDOF) checkpoint in the Golan Heights.
According to Abu al-Zein, the detentions were justified by the claim that the civilians had approached what the Israeli army calls the “red line,” referring to the ceasefire boundary separating Syrian-held areas from those occupied by Israel in the Golan Heights.
Similar incidents have been repeated in recent months in the Quneitra border region, where Israeli forces have detained shepherds and farmers for hours before releasing them, while others were transferred for interrogation inside the occupied territories.
Repeated incursions
On September 24, an Israeli army unit entered the village of Saida al-Golan in southern Quneitra province.
The village is administratively part of al-Qusayba subdistrict in the Fiq area, about 36 kilometers from Quneitra city.
At the time, Abu al-Zein told Enab Baladi that an Israeli force made up of six vehicles raided several homes in Saida al-Golan and searched them without making any arrests before withdrawing an hour later.
A few days earlier, on September 18, Israeli forces also advanced into the eastern Tel al-Ahmar area in southern Quneitra.
According to the state-run al-Ikhbariya channel, the Israeli military carried out excavation and earthwork operations in the eastern Tel al-Ahmar area after entering the vicinity of Kodna village in Quneitra’s countryside.
Abu al-Zein added that Israeli bulldozers leveled farmland and raised embankments in Tel al-Ahmar east, digging trenches in a move reminiscent of earlier fortifications built during Israel’s previous occupation of the western Tel al-Ahmar hill.
Nine Israeli bases in southern Syria
Abu al-Zein told Enab Baladi in a previous report that the Israeli army has established several bases across southern Syria, extending from Mount Hermon’s summit to the Yarmouk Basin on the border with Daraa province. These include eight military bases in Quneitra and one in Daraa.
Journalist Ziad al-Faheili also told Enab Baladi that Israel has built multiple bases in Quneitra and constructed a network of strategic roads linking its positions within the demilitarized zone, alarming residents due to the growing threat to their lands and resources.
According to al-Faheili, the main Israeli positions established after Assad’s fall are:
Mount Hermon Observatory
Tall al-Humur (northern sector)
Qurs al-Nufl hill west of Hadar
Jubata al-Khashab forest base, inside the natural reserve, including a helicopter landing pad; satellite images show around 50 dunams of land were cleared there
Base east of al-Hamidiya village
al-Adnaniyah (al-Mantra dam) base east of al-Qahtaniyah
Western Tel al-Ahmar base near Kodna village
Base in the destroyed Quneitra area
Al-Jazira Company base (which is the only base located in Daraa province)
Activists interviewed by Enab Baladi said these bases now serve as operational launch points, with Israeli troops sometimes advancing up to 16 kilometers inside Syrian territory from the Golan fence.
