Walshe trailed in fourth for the first 150 meters of the race, with Americans Regan Smith and Alex Shackell holding a near 3-second advantage over the rest of the field at the halfway mark, and never relinquishing it. Walshe was locked in a tight battle with Australian Brittany Castelluzzo, who hit the first 50 in 27.99 to Walshe’s 28.66, and the 100 in 1:00.24 to Walshe’s 1:00.75. At the 150, Castelluzzo held just a 0.03 advantage over Walshe, but the Irish swimmer powered home over the final 50 to overtake her at the finish, 2:05.07 to 2:05.49, taking bronze by 0.42 seconds.
Walshe eclipsed her former lifetime best of 2:07.24 and broke the previous national mark of 2:07.04, which had stood since 1997—making it Ireland’s oldest-standing short course national record until now. That mark was held by Michelle Smith, arguably the most decorated Irish swimmer in history, who is best known for her swims at the 1996 Atlanta Olympics where she won three gold medals and one bronze.
However, Smith’s legacy is tainted. Her performances were overshadowed by persistent doping rumors, which proved justified when she received a four-year ban in 1998 for using alcohol to tamper with her urine samples during drug tests. It was also revealed that she had taken androstenedione, a substance that was banned in 1997, prior to being tested.
Walshe now holds 11 individual Irish National Records: five in long course and six in short course.
Walshe’s individual Irish records:
LCM 100 fly – 57.96, 2023 LCM 200 fly – 2:07.42, 2025 LCM 200 free — 1:58.88, 2025 LCM 200 IM – 2:10.49, 2025 LCM 400 IM – 4:35.32, 2025 SCM 50 fly – 25.45, 2024 SCM 100 fly – 55.50, 2024 SCM 200 fly — 2:05.07, 2025 SCM 100 IM – 58.55, 2024 SCM 200 IM – 2:05.52, 2024 SCM 400 IM – 4:26.52, 2021Walshe is best known for her 400 IM performance at the 2021 Short Course World Championships, where she captured silver with her current best time of 4:26.52. In that race, she finished 1-2 with her training partner at the time, Canada’s Tessa Cieplucha, who won gold in 4:25.55.
More recently, Walshe made the Olympic final in the 400 IM in Paris, touching eighth. At the 2024 Short Course World Championships, she reached the finals of three events, placing fifth in both the 200 and 400 IMs and sixth in the 100 fly. At the long course World Championships in July, she finished eighth in both the 200 IM and 200 fly.
Later this weekend, she’s set to compete in the 100 fly, 200 IM, and 400 IM—tune-up swims for the European Short Course Championships scheduled for December 2-7 in Lublin, Poland, where she’ll have plenty of event options.
