ROCHESTER, N.Y. – Homelessness is a growing problem in Rochester. The latest report from the state comptroller shows a 41% increase in homelessness in the city compared to last year. The Green family wants to spread awareness of the problems they’re facing.

“When you have no body it means a lot. And I’m a man I don’t need to shed no tears but we need help how can we get help,” Kenneth Green said through tears.

A man, his fiancé and his 9-year-old twin babies are without a home to call their own. Green says it all started on Aug. 18 when his apartment’s rent increased. He could no longer afford it and there wasn’t anywhere cheaper in his area.

“None out here what so ever. Apartment range is between $950-$1,000. A family of four Monroe County saying they will pay $875,” Green said.

Ever since, the Green family has been living shelter to shelter. In just five days, he says the shelter plans to kick them out.

“I don’t want my family to be out on the streets no more. I want us to have a stable place to live,” Green said.

Green gets monthly housing assistance of $875 from Monroe County. He appreciates the help but he says the money is not enough to support a family of four. And the places that are within that budget?

“Either they want two adults or two children not a whole family of four,” Shannon Ford said.

“No one wants to accept the homeless,” Green said. “So what are you supposed to do to live out here in poverty.”

Marsha Augustin: “Have you tried looking for a job?”

Green: “I am work restricted. I’m on the disability team with Monroe County. Shannon has been looking and no one calls.”

He hopes his prayers are answered to put a roof over his family’s head.

“My strength with God I can’t give up at all gotta keep pushing through,” Green said.
