For the second time this postseason, the Chicago Cubs have reached a winner-take-all, do-or-die playoff game. It certainly makes for plenty of excitement, but it doesn’t exactly make the waiting easy. It’s a 7pm CT start, which might as well be 7,000pm CT.
We still don’t know who is starting for the Cubs, officially, but it really doesn’t matter in a game like this. It’s the most extreme version of what Craig Counsell always talks about (just getting 27 outs), and you worry about the next series if you get to the next series. The Cubs simply do not have the luxury of perfect planning or timing or an obvious dominant starter who can give them 6+. “This is a game where we’re going to have everybody available, maybe with the exception of Matt Boyd — everyone’s going to be available,” Counsell said, per the Tribune. “It’s cliche here, but we’ve got 11 pitchers to figure out how to get 27 outs. That’s how we’re treating it. We’re certainly going to need the bullpen formula that we’ve used (featuring a mixture of Drew Pomeranz, Daniel Palencia, Andrew Kittredge, Caleb Thielbar and Brad Keller). We’re going to have to get half the outs from not those five guys, right? And that’s how we’re looking at it and that’s what we’re going to have to get.” I expect that means Shōta Imanaga will get a couple innings for the Cubs, ideally in a pocket of six to eight hitters he can handle well. Obviously Colin Rea and Aaron Civale will be available for multiple innings. I expect that it also means Jameson Taillon will be available in relief for a very short outing if absolutely necessary (you wouldn’t HOLD HIM out to SAVE him for Game One of the NLCS, but you might manage his appearance such that it’s a bit like a throwing day before his next start). © Mark Hoffman/Milwaukee Journal Sentinel / USA TODAY NETWORK via Imagn Images One guy to not get any shock hopes up about: Cade Horton. He threw a pretty full session yesterday, it sounds like, and that would simply not realistically allow him to pitch tonight even if he felt great and even if the Cubs wanted. No, him throwing yesterday is pretty clearly about seeing where he is for the NLCS if the Cubs make it. I’m sure he’s been brought along as quickly as possible, and as safely as possible. The NLDS was just never going to be on the table. Meanwhile, it’ll be the same situation for the Brewers – all hands on deck, I mean. I wouldn’t rule out anyone besides Freddy Peralta, but, if I’m the Brewers, I definitely try to make sure I can get multiple innings out of Jacob Misiorowski, in addition to getting an inning from each of the usual suspect relievers. I’m not sure how much I’d trust Quinn Priester in relief against a group of Cubs who just lit him up. What a freaking game to conclude the ALDS series between the Mariners and Tigers, eh? The Mariners took 15 innings (no free runners on second in the postseason*), but they beat the Tigers to move on to the ALCS against the Blue Jays:JORGE POLANCO WINS IT IN THE 15TH INNING!THE @MARINERS ARE HEADING TO THE ALCS!!! pic.twitter.com/IEb6DLrHaY
— MLB (@MLB) October 11, 2025 *(I feel compelled to reiterate how stupid it is that the league plays with one set of rules for 162 games, and then says, “You know, now that we’re in our most important, most visible games, we’re going to get rid of the rule we created to make our games better.” Either you think the free runner is good for the game, or you don’t. Pick a lane and keep it for the regular season and the postseason. I know I’m mostly alone on this one. That’s OK. I’ll wear it.) The punishment has been handed out for the Padres harassing the umpires on their way out of the ballpark after Game Three of the Wild Card Series anddddd it’s basically nothing at all:Jose Iglesias has received a one-game suspension and a fine for what MLB calls "unprofessional conduct" toward umpires following Game 3 of the NL Wild Card series.Xander Bogaerts also received a fine.
— Kyle Glaser (@KyleAGlaser) October 10, 2025 I’m kinda shocked at how light that is, and I wonder if MLB took it easy on them because of the circumstances.
