Frontier Academy doesn’t let any obstacle keep it from making school history ...Saudi Arabia

On the golf course, self-doubt can be every bit the obstacle as the deepest sand trap or the most sprawling of water hazards.

This past Monday and Tuesday, the four golfers representing Frontier Academy’s rapidly rising program didn’t let that — or any other — obstacle stop them.

The Wolverines built a three-stroke lead after Monday’s initial round of the two-day Class 2A boys golf state tournament at Elmwood Golf Course in Pueblo.

Then, on Tuesday, with all the pressure that comes with being the incumbent leader, sophomore standout Isaiah Fowler and his teammates refused to blink.

And they quickly and emphatically slammed the door on any challengers trying to close the gap in the final 18 holes.

“We’re such an inspired team,” Fowler said. “We really, really try our best every time. And we put a lot of pressure on ourselves during practice and while playing games. So the pressure (at state) wasn’t really an unusual thing for us.”

Across the two days and two rounds, Frontier Academy scored a 32-over-par, three-player team score of 452.

Its closest competition, runners-up Forge Christian and Brush, each scored a 466.

In dominating the 16-team field, the Wolverines became boys golf state champions for the first time in Frontier Academy history.

“They have worked really hard to get to this point,” coach Erin Bley said. “I don’t think it has fully sunk in with them yet. They’re still living on cloud nine, not (recognizing) they’ve accomplished what they’ve accomplished. … For them to be a part of school history is huge.”

Not only is this the Wolverines’ first boys golf state title in school history. It is only the school’s fourth team state title in any sport.

Boys golf is just the second sport in which Frontier has won a team state title. The previous three titles all came in boys cross country.

After that initial day of the state tournament, Frontier’s coaches and players had a meeting while chomping on pizza Monday night.

Everyone donning Wolverines apparel maintained laser-like focus on the eve of Tuesday’s championship run culmination.

No one was celebrating early. No one was taking a thing for granted.

“It was about maintaining a sense of ‘What do we need to do? We really need to focus on scoring in the 70s and doing what you guys know how to do,’ ” Bley said.

Bley also said each of her players took a deep dive into the extensive statistics they track of their own performance — how frequently they landed in the fairway, how many putts each hole required, how many greens they reached in regulation, etc.

So, in many ways, Frontier Academy was fueled by science as much as it was sheer talent and emotion.

And perhaps most importantly, while analyzing all that data, the Wolverines’ quartet of players recognized all the areas they could have saved strokes during Day 1, even as they built that first-place lead.

That kept them hungry, while recognizing they could be — and perhaps even needed to be — better during the second day if they were going to lock up that historic state title.

“I was just communicating with some of the less-experienced players: ‘Stick with it. Don’t even think about the lead. It’s not over yet. Just keep doing your best, regardless of the outcome,’ ” Fowler said. “I checked the score about once or twice on the front 9. Then, I checked while in the 18th tee box just to see where we were at. Once I did that, I thought, ‘Wow. We just won a team title.’ … It was really kind of a surreal feeling.”

Fowler was inches from securing an individual state title, as well, on Tuesday.

After the first day on Monday, he was tied for fifth on the individual leaderboard, shooting a 3-over-par 73.

He began the second round red hot, birdying four times in the first 13 holes and leading for much of the afternoon before Swink senior Noah Pearson rallied from four shots down in the final four holes of regulation.

Pearson and Fowler ultimately tied at a 3-over-par 143 through 36 holes, but Pearson got the better of Fowler in the third hole of a tiebreaking playoff.

Fowler described the experience as bittersweet.

Though elated to place second after finishing sixth at state during his freshman campaign a year earlier, Fowler experienced the type of heartbreak that comes with being so close to an individual title only to fall just short.

“It was really cool making that jump (to second),” Fowler said. “I’ve put in a lot of work. And just to see it pay off was really satisfying. Yes, it was a little bittersweet. I couldn’t close it out. And I very well could have won. But it was still a great learning experience, and I wouldn’t trade it.”

Bley said she expects Fowler to use the experience of having an individual title right at his fingertips as inspiration for probable pursuits of championships the next two years.

“When we were going up to the tee box and we were walking on the fairway for the tiebreaker, he said, ‘You know what? Regardless of what happens, I am learning so much by having to do this,’ ” Bley said. “And he was. He was learning to handle pressure, what he needs to do to not get himself in this situation so he can just win it outright next year. I have no doubt that for the rest of Isaiah’s high school career, he will easily finish within the top 5, if not No. 1.”

A new CHSAA rule made it perhaps even more difficult than normal for Frontier Academy, and other contenders, to qualify a full four-person team for the state tournament this season.

Rather than having a regional tournament — which would normally take place about a week before state — to determine state qualifiers, the top 84 golfers in the state qualify automatically through regular season play.

A ranking system created by the website Iwanamaker.com determines those top 84 golfers, and each program is required to participate in at least five qualifying rounds during the regular season.

The Wolverines had seven individuals in the top 84 spots of the 2A rankings. However, the most state tournament participants each team is allowed is four.

So, even though senior Hayden Leblount (who tied for 20th at state, shooting a 157), junior Canton Sandstrom (tied-20th, 157), junior Owen Steward (tied-41st, 165) and Fowler officially represented Frontier Academy in the state competition, Bley is quick to point out how this state title is a true team award that belongs to every individual within the program.

“To have a team that deep speaks hugely for the kids that tried out and all the ones that have done what they’ve done so far,” Bley said. “It was the four that made it (to state). But it was also the 12 of them that really pushed each other all season long.”
