For the first time ever, Paraguay will play host to the Pan American Games.
On Friday, it was announced that the country’s capital, Asuncion was awarded the 2031 Pan American Games.
Asuncion narrowly beat out a joint Brazilian bid from Rio de Janeiro and Niteroi, collecting 28 votes to 24 for the Rio/Niteroi bid.
Asuncion also made a bid for the 2027 Pan American Games, but lost out to Lima, Peru. The city also recently hosted the Junior Pan American Games.
The Pan American Games are organized by the Pan American Sports Organization.
Asuncion announced plans to invest nearly $390 million into the event, according to an article on Voz. That will include a village to house athletes, a stadium for athletics, and a new arena.
“We want to break with the paradigm and show that countries small in size can organize events of great magnitude, with excellence, planning and vision,” said Paraguay Olympic Committee President Camilo Perez Lopez in his presentation, according to Voz.
The last Pan American Games in 2023 were held in Santiago, Chile, where 6,900 athletes in 40 sports and 59 disciplines competed.
The United States has won the medal total in 17 of the 19 Pan American Games conducted, and swimming has obviously played a big part in that success.
At the 2023 event, the U.S. won a combined 21 gold medals and 48 medals overall in pool and open water competitions. The U.S. also won gold medals in both men and women’s water polo.
Mexico won the most gold (8) and overall medals (11) in diving, and also took home men’s and women’s gold medals in artistic swimming.
This will be the fourth consecutive time the Pan American Games will be held in South America. No U.S. city has hosted the event since Indianapolis in 1987.
The Pan American Games are held every four years, with countries from the Americas competing. The first Pan American games were held in 1951 in Buenos Aires.
