Greeley-Weld Habitat for Humanity joins a new program to recycle used paint ...Saudi Arabia

Greeley residents can now donate used paint to the Greeley-Weld Habitat for Humanity for reuse and recycling as part of the national PaintCare program.

Greeley-Weld Habitat for Humanity ReStore recently announced its participation in the PaintCare program, a national effort to recycle used paint that would otherwise go to waste. More than 850 million gallons of paint are purchased in the United States each year, according to the PaintCare program website, and about 10% of it goes to waste.

The Greeley-Weld Habitat for Humanity ReStore is a self-sustaining nonprofit that recycles donations from individuals and businesses, then resells them to the public at a reduced cost. The profits from ReStore are then used to support families in need of affordable homeownership.

“We are thrilled that Greeley-Weld Habitat for Humanity ReStore has joined the two other drop-off sites in Greeley that make it easy for households and businesses to recycle leftover paint,” Colorado PaintCare manager Sonya Hansen said. “All of the participating drop-off sites play a key role in making sure leftover paint is managed responsibly.”

Liquid paint contains toxic materials that can leach into the soil, impacting ground fertility, and its volatile organic compounds can contribute to air pollution. Oil-based paints are considered particularly hazardous for the same reasons and are classified as household hazardous waste.

It is for this reason that PaintCare was founded by paint companies through the American Coatings Association, and has collected more than 7 million gallons of paint since 2015. ReStore is now the third location in Greeley that allows residents to donate their unwanted house paint, stain and varnish.

“What’s great is that we don’t have to turn that away anymore,” ReStore Operations Manager Brianna Nelson said. “So it’s good for the store. It’s good for the community. Their goal is to keep stuff out of the landfill, and I think that it just matches up with our mission and our goal here in the ReStore perfectly.”

Unopened paint donated to ReStore will be resold at a discounted price, with rates as low as $1.60 for any paint more than two gallons. Any paint that cannot be resold will be recycled and turned into either recycled paint products, such as concrete mixtures and landscaping materials, or sent to processors to be turned into fuel if it is an oil-based paint.

Those wishing to donate used paint can bring unwanted paints, primers, stains, sealers and clear top coatings to the Greeley-Weld Habitat for Humanity ReStore, 2080 Greeley Mall. The store is open 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Saturday and limits paint drop-offs to five gallons of paint per visit.

The store accepts all paint brands, regardless of where they were purchased in Colorado. The store does not accept spray paint or other spray products, containers without original labels or containers that are leaking or empty.
