SwimSwam Pulse is a recurring feature tracking and analyzing the results of our periodic A3 Performance Polls. You can cast your vote in our newest poll on the SwimSwam homepage, about halfway down the page on the right side.

Our most recent poll asked SwimSwam readers which showdown they’re looking forward to the most at this weekend in Carmel:

Question: Which matchup are you most excited for at the Carmel World Cup?

RESULTS

M 200 IM (Marchand/Casas/Foster/Kos) – 28.4% W 50 BK (Walsh/McKeown/Smith) – 24.5% W 200 IM (McIntosh/Douglass/A.Walsh) – 23.1% W 200 BK (McKeown/Smith/McIntosh) – 21.7% Other – 1.6% W 200 FLY (McIntosh/Smith) – 0.7%

The men’s 200 IM was one of the most exciting events of the 2025 World Championships.

After a stunning world record performance from Leon Marchand in the semis, the Frenchman outduelled American Shaine Casas in the final, while Hungarian Hubert Kos won bronze to make it an all-Texas podium, as the trio train together in Austin under coach Bob Bowman.

On Saturday at the opening leg of the World Cup series in Carmel, the trio is scheduled to go head-to-head in the 200 IM once again, with another one of their training partners, Carson Foster, who was a medal contender coming into the World Championship final but was forced to withdraw due to injury, also in the mix.

Last fall on the World Cup circuit, Marchand swept the 200 IM at all three stops, breaking Ryan Lochte‘s 12-year-old world record (1:49.63) at the final leg in a time of 1:48.88.

Last December, at Short Course Worlds, Casas won gold in 1:49.51 to break Lochte’s American Record and rank #2 all-time behind Marchand.

Kos, meanwhile, is the reigning NCAA champion in the 200 IM, and Foster has been as fast as 1:50.96 in short course meters, done en route to silver at the 2022 SC Worlds.

In our latest A3 Performance Poll, this race came out on top when we asked readers which matchup they’re looking forward to the most in Carmel.

Close behind was the women’s 50 back, but on Friday, both Regan Smith and Gretchen Walsh no-showed the prelims, and trailing that option in the poll was the women’s 200 IM, which lost superstar Summer McIntosh after she dropped out of the meet on Thursday due to illness.

The women’s 200 back also picked up 21.7% of votes, and despite McIntosh not being in the field, we are still expecting to see another showdown between Smith and Kaylee McKeown on Sunday (along with the 100 back on Saturday).

Last fall, with McKeown not competing, Smith reset both world records multiple times, culminating with times of 54.02 in the 100 back and 1:58.04 in the 200 back. Prior to the World Cup, McKeown owned both records with times of 54.56 and 1:58.94, respectively.

Below, vote in our new A3 Performance Poll, which asks: What’s your reaction to the NCAA Championship changes:
