Guess Who’s Suddenly Got Great Numbers in the Postseason? ...Middle East

Sport by : (Bleacher Nation) -

I won’t belabor The Kyle Tucker Story. You know the beats by now. Huge trade. Early domination. Dreams of an extension. Conflicting rumors about the possibility. Midseason crash. After-the-fact revelations about a fracture. Terrible struggles. Starting to turn it around. Mystery calf injury.

What matters as we sit here right now is that Tucker is healthy enough to be the Cubs’ designated hitter each day this postseason, and after some strong games, including his first postseason dinger last night, Tucker’s actually looking more and more like the guy the Cubs acquired in the first place.

Tucker is now hitting .304/.429/.435/151 wRC+ in the playoffs for the Cubs. That’s the third best production this postseason for the team, behind only Michael Busch and Nico Hoerner, and it’s very much the level of production you’d hope to get at this time of year from a superstar bat.

“I feel good, I’m swinging at pitches I want to swing at and laying off some of the other ones,” Tucker said after the win, per the Tribune. “It’s not always going to go your way, but as long as you can go up there and have a chance and put yourself in good spots, you’re at least giving yourself a shot.”

Because of the odd trajectory of his season, and particularly the final two months, Tucker has a unique opportunity to rewrite not only his after-season free agency story, but also his legacy with the Cubs, if this winds up being his only year with the team. If Tucker finds a way to contribute again tomorrow night, and the Cubs make a run into the NLCS or – heaven help me – the World Series, it’s not hard to imagine that kind of stretch neutralizing a lot of whatever potentially ugly storylines could have emerged.

For the most part, I’m not thinking TOO much about that stuff, though. The games right now are too centrally-located in my mind, and that means the majority of my thoughts about Kyle Tucker are about how he looks at the plate. How he can contribute to wins. How much it changes this lineup when he’s raking.

More tomorrow night, Kyle. Please and thanks.
