Ian Happ was drafted by the Cubs in the first round of the 2015 MLB Draft. He debuted for Chicago on May 13, 2017, has been elected to one All-Star team, and has earned three Gold Glove awards for his work in left field. All of that, I’m guessing you already knew.
What you might not know is that Happ has already hit 173 regular-season homers with the Cubs, ranking 15th all-time in franchise history — ahead of guys like Willson Contreras, Kyle Schwarber, Javy Baez, and Kris Bryant (just one behind Andre Dawson and six behind Derrek Lee). But last night, in his 15th postseason appearance, Happ hit the biggest home run of his Cubs career.
Ian Happ Had His Moment
Stepping up to the plate against the Brewers’ best starting pitcher, Freddy Peralta, with two on and two outs in the first inning of an elimination game, Ian Happ set the tone for the entire game … and delivered the most memorable moment of his entire career.

— Chicago Cubs (@Cubs) October 10, 2025To that point, it had been a miserable October for Happ, who had just two hits and two walks in 24 plate appearances, good for a postseason slash line of just .095/.174/.286 (…including 11 strikeouts). And even though Happ had homered off Freddy Peralta earlier this series, Peralta has generally owned Happ throughout their respective careers: 4-37, 15Ks. Needless to say, I don’t think anyone had particularly high hopes for that precise moment.
Instead, with one swing of the bat, Ian Happ increased the Cubs’ win expectancy from just slightly more than a coin flip all the way up to 79.1%.
“It felt great,” said Happ after the game via Cubs.com. “The guys have been carrying me all postseason, so to contribute in that moment and give us the lead was awesome for me. It was a really cool moment at Wrigley.”

— Marquee Sports Network (@WatchMarquee) October 10, 2025And his teammates/manager agree:
Pete Crow-Armstrong: “So cool…I felt like I needed to tell him after the Wild Card that so much of what’s driving me personally is just his place in this organization, wanting to win these ballgames for him.” Craig Counsell: “I’m just so happy for Ian…I think it was great for Ian to have the playoff moment that he deserved. It was a huge swing, a huge swing.”And here’s the crazy thing: Ian Happ was about a combined 3 feet from launching three more homers last night:

— Codify (@CodifyBaseball) October 10, 2025In his next three at-bats, Happ absolutely crushed the ball repeatedly: 101.8 MPH (356 feet), 97.3 MPH (361 feet), and 107.2 MPH (378 feet). If the wind had even been NEUTRAL, he might’ve had one of the most insane nights of his entire career.
As it stands, that first-inning homer was enough to ice the game. Good for him. Good for the Cubs. Now, hopefully, he has many more moments like that this month after he helps the Cubs advance to the NLCS with a win over the Brewers in Milwaukee this Saturday.
