ROCHESTER, N.Y. — Here’s your guide to events happening on Friday this weekend in the Rochester area. You can learn more about what’s happening around town on our Community Calendar.

Rochester Amerks kick off 70th season (Friday)

Hockey is once again returning to the Blue Cross Arena. The Rochester Amerks will begin their 2025-26 season with a home game on Friday against the Toronto Marlies. You can see News10NBC’s guide to the season here.

The puck drops at 7:05 p.m. at the Blue Cross Arena. You can get tickets here. But, before then, there will be a ROC the Block Party starting at 4 p.m. on Broad Street.

The celebration will include live music from the band Special Blend, a bounce house, and face painting. Some Amerks alumni will also make an appearance, including hall-of-famers Randy Cunneyworth, Jody Gage, Jim Hofford, and Steve Langdon. Broad Street will be closed to traffic from Exchange Boulevard to South Avenue.

At the game, the team will honor Amerks legend Scott Metcalfe, who died in June, in a moment of silence. During the game, the Amerks will celebrate their 70th anniversary with 1950s-inspired jerseys, which will be auctioned off. The first 2,500 fans will get an anniversary magnet.

Can sculptures at Strong Museum (Saturday)

Architects, engineers, and students will compete on Saturday at the Strong National Museum of Play by building giant sculptures from full cans of food.

It’s happening at the Adams Atrium from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. After the sculptures are built and winners are declared in several categories, the sculptures will remain on display for two weeks. After that, all food is donated to Foodlink. You can learn more here.

LGBTQ Fall Film Festival (through Sunday, Oct. 19)

ImageOut’s 19th annual fall film festival to highlight the LGBTQ+ community is underway. Organizers are screening films at The Little Theatre, the George Eastman Museum’s Dryden Theatre, and RIT’s Magic Studio Wegmans Theater. There are also special events at Boulder Cafe & Lounge, Jackrabbit, and Equal Grounds Community Cafe.

The films began on Thursday and run through Sunday, Oct. 19. You can see the full schedule here and some films will be available to view online. The festival will hold College Day on Saturday, Oct. 11.

Food and clothing drive at the VOC (Saturday)

The Veterans Outreach Center is holding its annual food and clothing drive on Saturday. The nonprofit is asking people to drop off donations to the center at 447 South Ave. between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. to serve those who have served their country.

The VOC is asking people to donate canned goods, pasta, cereal, rice, new underwear, and winter coats or clothing. People can find the donation bin by driving down Veterans Place toward Comfort Street. You can call the VOC at 585-295-7853 for more information.

RIT’s “Big Shot No. 37” project at Highmark Stadium (Saturday)

The Rochester Institute of Technology is shining a light on Highmark Stadium’s farewell season. The stadium has been chosen as the site of RIT’s “Big Shot No. 37,” which the school describes as “painting with light.”

Students and people of the community are being invited to use flashlights and light sources to light up the stadium on Saturday to document the location before it closes. Volunteers are being asked to get there between 6:30-7:30 p.m. and wear dark clothing. The photo will eventually will be hung in the Bills’ new stadium.

Some of the other places that have been the site of RIT’s “Big Shot,” include the Susan B. Anthony Museum and House (2022), Cowboys Stadium (2013), The Royal Palace in Sweden (2003), and the Highland Hospital in 1987, which was the first time they did the project.

Final community garage sale at the Rochester Public Market (Sunday)

The Rochester Public Market is holding its final community garage sale and super flea of the season on Sunday. Community members will sell secondhand treasures, collectibles, and unique finds. The market runs from 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. It’s free to enter. The community garage sale series started in April.

Hispanic Heritage Month closing celebration (Sunday)

The International Plaza on North Clinton Avenue will close out Hispanic Heritage Month with live music and dancing on Sunday.

The celebration will feature DJ entertainment by La Nueva Secuencia, known for their high-energy Latin beats. People will also have the chance to win prizes and giveaways from Casa Campo Restaurant and Condado Bar and Grill. The free event runs from 1 to 5 p.m. This marks the final event of the Market Days series, which began in May.
