Link does survive the premiere episode — Dr. Beltran (Natalie Morales) gets the honor of being the first casualty of the explosion — but he is not out of the woods yet. Scaffolding collapses on Link in the operating room and causes severe internal bleeding. Owen (Kevin McKidd), Bailey (Chandra Wilson), Teddy (Kim Raver) and Ben (Jason George) have to free him from the rubble and carry his injured body down a flight of stairs to operate on him. There are multiple touch-and-go moments along the way, including one that inspires Bailey to let Link call Jo (Camilla Luddington) in case he never gets to speak to her again.
The pair have only been married for 36 hours in the Grey's universe, but the recent nuptials only made Carmack more stressed going into the Season 22 premiere. "You think getting married and having wedded bliss gave me a sense of security on Grey's Anatomy?" the actor joked, echoing his co-star Luddington's sentiments from earlier this summer. "Heck no. It almost made it feel more likely that they were going to feed Link to the wolves."

What was it like being the patient in this situation and having everyone talking around you instead of being the one to rush into action? It was definitely a role reversal to be lying on the floor and looking up at my colleagues doing their frantic medical talk and saying, "We've got to keep him alive," when I'm the patient. I thought maybe it would be a nice little break. I'll be lying down. I won't have to be on my feet all day, but it was not [a break]. I was hooked up to IVs. I was intubated. I was on a floor. I had drywall getting kicked in my face and smoke in my eyes. It was not as relaxing as some patient gigs.
Can it get worse than that "final" phone call with Jo? What was it like filming that? Those are brutal moments to play and to go there as an actor, to try and believe in that scenario. But Grey's Anatomy, with all of the talent behind the scenes, they all do a great job of creating this environment...of painting this reality. I am so lucky that I get to go to work and react to a circumstance that already feels real. I don't have to dread going to work, even though it's an extremely emotional ride. I know that everybody's going to help the scene get to where it goes. But yeah, the last goodbyes — they're a stab in the heart to play.
What is your hope for Season 22, outside of Link living through this?Life is definitely first. And the babies are on the way. More than anything, Link wants to be there for it. He wants Jo to have a healthy delivery. He wants to meet his girls. He wants to live his life with his family and continue being a surgeon. Those are his greatest hopes.
How would you like to caution fans or encourage them to make it through the next few episodes? The stories that are told on Grey's Anatomy are told with heart and love. Going forward, regardless of what happens, it's not just to torture the audience. There's a story there. There's hope. There's redemption, all of those things. Let's keep that in mind as we have to go through the darkness.
Grey's Anatomy continues Thursdays at 10 p.m. on ABC. Episodes are available to stream the next day on Hulu.
