ROCHESTER, N.Y. – Over the last few weeks, dozens of Medicare Advantage plans have been canceled, leaving many seniors panicking about their insurance coverage.
Health insurers say rising hospital and drug prices are leading to massive losses, so they’re dramatically scaling back Advantage Plans, also known as Medicare Part C.
Deciding whether to choose another Advantage plan or explore other Medicare options is no simple task.
That’s where Lifespan comes in. Each week the agency is holding a workshop to help seniors go through the options that are available in Monroe and Livingston Counties.
“Right now, as you can imagine, we’re in the thick of it. People are panicking with their termination letters,” says Rene Pettenski, a Medicare Counselor at Lifespan.
Lifespan is getting dozens of calls every day from folks looking for help, “some of them are crying, they are just besides themselves,” explains Pettenski.
But seniors shouldn’t panic. There are still at least a handful of options that are available in the marketplace locally. “Some of the insurers only have one or two plans where before they had three or four,” Pettenski explains.
Most of the options are now HMO plans which require people to use the doctors, hospitals and facilities that are contracted with the plan.
There are far fewer PPO plans in the Advantage marketplace for 2026 and they are more expensive so, that’s something folks with cancellation notices have to consider.
If you got a cancellation notice and you’re having trouble understanding your options, you can sign up for a workshop at Lifespan, or you can call and get some help over the phone. There are about a dozen volunteer counselors here who are helping people through this.
