“Lithium ion batteries can experience what’s known as a thermal runaway, releasing toxic gases, reaching extreme temperatures, and sometimes reigniting hours and even days after we’ve extinguished with traditional methods,” said Monroe County Fire Coordinator Steve Tschiderer.
The announcement was made Thursday during National Fire Prevention Awareness Week. This year’s theme is “Charge into Fire Safety: Lithium-Ion Batteries in Your Home.”
Residents in Monroe County can recycle lithium-ion batteries at the WM ecopark, helping to mitigate potential hazards associated with improper disposal.
According to Monroe County, since 2023, the ecopark has collected 3.5 tons of lithium-ion and lithium-based batteries for proper disposal.
