ROCHESTER, N.Y. — Monroe Community College has received a $3 million investment to create the nation’s first associate degree program for optical systems technology.

The program will be housed at the new Advanced Technology Center at the Brighton campus. The college broke ground on the 110,000-square-foot facility and it’s expected to open in the fall of 2026.

The new $65 million center seeks to expand MCC’s advanced technology programs, including precision tooling, HVAC services, automotive technology, and renewable energy through a new solar lab.

The investment in the optics program comes from the company Sydor Optics, industry leaders John and Barbara Bruning, and SPIE, an international society for optics and photonics. The
