News10NBC got answers from Mark Quinn, the Superintendent of Horticulture for Monroe County. He says they’re tar spots, a fungal disease that makes the leaves look like they’ve been splashed with tar. The fungus is most noticeable in early fall and it’s common on Norway maples and sycamore trees.
While it might not be pretty to look at, Quinn says it won’t cause any long-term damage to your trees. It is not harmful to humans or pets. When the infected leaves fall to the ground, they can create an environment where the spores from the fungus can thrive. The best way to prevent tar spots from spreading is to rake up the infected leaves and toss them out.
