Crystal Palace Soaring, Nottingham Forest’s Reality Check: How Premier League Teams’ Starts Compare to 2024-25 ...Middle East

News by : (The Analyst) -

How many points have each team collected after seven Premier League games this season compared to this stage in 2024-25?

We’re now seven games into the 2025-26 Premier League campaign, and with an international break pausing the action, it feels an ideal time to compare performances of clubs to this time last season.

Arsenal lead the Premier League table as we hit the October internationals, winning 16 points from a possible 21. That’s the lowest points tally for a team leading the Premier League after seven matchdays since 2021-22, when Chelsea topped the standings. The Gunners had actually won a point more at this stage last season (17), although they were third below Manchester City on goal difference and a point behind eventual league winners Liverpool (18).

Looking at the 17 ever-present clubs in the Premier League across both this and last season, only six have improved their points tally from the first seven games of 2025-26 compared to 2024-25.

The biggest improvement has been from Crystal Palace, who have won nine points more from the opening seven matchdays of this season (12) than they did in 2024-25 (3).

The Eagles had been in incredible form before last weekend’s last-gasp defeat at Everton, with a club record 19-game unbeaten run across all competitions – 12 of those matches coming in the Premier League.

Oliver Glasner’s side have also enjoyed the best improvement in the underlying numbers. Their expected goals difference of +4.1 this season is a big change from -3.2 after seven games of 2024-25, with their 7.3 xG swing the best of the ever-present Premier League teams across the two campaigns.

Everton and Bournemouth, with six points more than 2024-25 after seven games, follow Palace in the overperformance rankings, with Tottenham Hotspur (4) and Manchester United (2) also winning more points from their first seven games this season after disappointing campaigns last term.

Wolverhampton Wanderers have also improved on last season’s points tally at this stage of the season, but winning two points instead of one is hardly cause for celebration.

Of the 17 ever-present teams across the last two seasons, Aston Villa and Nottingham Forest have suffered the biggest drop-off in the Premier League over the opening seven matchdays.

Both teams have won five points fewer this season compared to the same stage last term – Forest have taken five points compared to 10 in 2024-25, and Unai Emery’s Villa have earned nine, down from 14 last season.

West Ham United and Manchester City follow them in the rankings with a four-point drop, while six teams (Brentford, Brighton, Chelsea, Fulham, Liverpool and Newcastle) have collected three points fewer through seven games of 2025-26 compared to 2024-25.

The three promoted clubs have done far, far better this term than last season’s contingent.

Sunderland have been the most impressive of those three sides, collecting 11 points from their seven games and sitting ninth as we hit the October international break. The Black Cats’ points tally is the same as all three promoted clubs combined after seven matchdays of 2024-25, with Southampton (1), Ipswich Town (4) and Leicester City (6) all struggling.

Add that to Leeds United’s eight points and Burnley’s four points, the three promoted clubs have won a combined total of 23 points over the opening seven matchdays of 2025-26; that’s 12 more than last season.

The three promoted clubs have only won this many points between them in one of the last seven Premier League seasons: 2022-23 (also 23 points), when Nottingham Forest, Bournemouth and Fulham all eventually stayed up.
