‘Talks too much’ – Ruben Amorim excuse for Manchester United form left Simon Jordan fuming ...Middle East

Less talk, more substance is the message for Ruben Amorim.

The Manchester United boss has displayed every emotion possible during his 11 months at the club.

When Marcus Rashford netted the first goal of the Amorim era at Ipswich last November it felt like their woes could eventually pass but since then it has been back to square one.

Amorim’s smiles upon his arrival were quickly wiped away but as United’s struggles continue to be laid bare, the Portuguese has become more vocal perhaps as a means of dealing with the biggest conundrum of his managerial career to date.

Getting Manchester United firing again is one of football’s biggest challenges and those that have been brave enough to take it on have encountered a host of difficulties along the way.

But to combat those difficulties, Amorim must pick his battles wisely and according to talkSPORT’s Simon Jordan, the Man United boss must first critique his own conduct, particularly when speaking to the media.

Ruben Amorim’s finger pointing

Ahead of the Red Devils’ 2-0 win over Sunderland on Saturday, Amorim felt that his players were subjected to too much noise regarding his system from high-profile pundits.

Ex-Man United stars such as Gary Neville and Roy Keane have been critical of Amorim’s rigid formation in recent weeks as they posted yet another disappointing start to the season.

Discussing Amorim’s comments, Jordan said: “It depends who he’s talking about. I imagine he means pundits like Roy Keane and ex-Man United players that have a view.

“Well, you must have to look at yourself then, Ruben, because if you’re a leader and you command respect and attention and your players will run through brick walls for you, then they will listen to you and not someone else.

“So your issue is with yourself and your inability to command and demand the attention of your players rather than a bunch of talking heads that once kicked a football for Man United, commanding more attention.

“Of course, players will listen,” the former Crystal Palace owner added. “The players that are looking for excuses or looking for a reason why they are not performing in a way that they perhaps could and should.

“But for me, Amorim talks too much. He says things that enable him to be criticised.”

Asked to touch on what Amorim does to invite critique, Jordan fumed: “He makes observations about the size of the football club and the level of sponsors and the two owners, like somehow that’s an obstacle in his way.

“That size of sponsor, that size of attention and that size of owner has given him hundreds of millions of pounds to spend on players.

“I think what he says is unwise at times, but he seems to be getting away with it, so he must think that is a very wise way to be.

“He gets his name chanted from the terraces by the United fans for achieving the square root of nothing.

“He’s made Man United worse. They performed pathetically in the Europa League final when there was an opportunity to redeem themselves.

Amorim has a 40 per cent win record during his time at Old Trafford

“Maybe this is all part of his master plan.”

Gary Neville bites back

Meanwhile, Manchester United legend Gary Neville labelled Amorim’s comments as ‘excuse mentality’ while claiming players should question their place at the club if they are unable to cope with outside noise.

“I’ve not got a lot of time for that,” he said on the Gary Neville podcast.

“If pundits are getting in your head, you shouldn’t be playing for the club, simple as that.

“Do people not remember Alan Hansen criticising us as young kids, saying ‘you can’t win anything with kids’?

“That was the greatest centre-back in that moment, the most successful centre-back of all time at that moment, talking of us as if we were inferior and nowhere near good enough. Do they not think we got criticised during our football careers?

“I’m sorry, you’re playing for Manchester United, it comes with the territory. You’ve got to step up.”

Neville also took exception with Amorim appearing to play the blame game with the club’s ex-stars rather than taking accountability for his side’s lousy start to the season.

“I never blamed anyone else when we lost football matches,” he explained.

“I played in a dressing room whereby when you lost football matches you came in and said, ‘sorry about that today lads, I was a mess for that goal’, there was accountability.

“Why would you blame other people when you’re losing matches? That’s a pretty big problem in itself.

“I’ve not got any time for that. Excuse mentality, shortcuts, blaming other people, it’s the worst thing you can do in life.

“They need to concentrate on doing their job and doing it well and winning football matches. That’s the only thing that’s going to shut people up, and that’s winning football matches, and they’ve not won anywhere near enough football matches.”
