Wildcats’ Brent Brennan shows faith in kicker Michael Salgado-Medina despite recent struggles ...Middle East

Sport by : (Arizona sports) -

Through the first two games of the season, Arizona Wildcats kicker Michael Salgado-Medina was a perfect 4-for-4 on field goals. Since then, he is 5-for-10 with all but one of his misses coming from inside 50 yards.

Wildcats head coach Brent Brennan is confident Salgado-Medina will bounce back and has no intentions of having anyone else kick field goals.

“We have faith in Money Mike,” Brennan said Monday. “He’s a young player but he’s getting better every week, and we’re going to keep putting him out there because we believe in him.”

A true sophomore, Salgado-Medina was the punter last season for Arizona and had not attempted a collegiate field goal prior to this year.

Excluding a 62-yard miss to end a half, all of his misses have been from 46 or 47 yards out. Salgado-Medina has proven he can hit longer field goals. He converted a 52-yard try in the season opener and kicked through a 57-yard attempt in Saturday’s win over Oklahoma State.

Brennan wants to focus on those successes and maintaining his kicker’s confidence, rather than bringing him down for his mistakes.

“I think, at the end of the day, everyone likes to be encouraged. Nobody likes to get beaten to the ground,” Brennan said. “If you make a mistake, do we have a better chance to respond from that mistake if me as the head coach is all over your case and making you feel bad about the mistake you already made? Or is it better for me to take the approach of ‘we’re putting you back out there because we believe in you?'”

Brennan is working to build a community of players and coaches that work hard and encourage each other even through struggles. The approach appears to be working, as in his second season as head coach, Brennan has already matched his win total from last year.

“I think culture is one of those things, it’s such an overused word these days, but it is such an important part of building a football program,” he said. “It’s something that your players and your coaches have to fight for every day, and I think ours do.”

The Wildcats (4-1, 1-1 Big 12) will next face off against No. 18 BYU (5-0, 2-0 Big 12) on Saturday at 5 p.m. MST.
