John Harbaugh is running out of excuses and latest coaching decision could finally cost him Ravens job ...Middle East

John Harbaugh is a Super Bowl champion and coaches one of the most talent quarterbacks in NFL history.

So why is one of the longest-tenured leaders in the league trying to get himself fired?

The Baltimore Ravens were destroyed 44-10 by the Houston Texans on Sunday.

But even the absence of two-time NFL MVP Lamar Jackson doesn’t explain a 1-4 start for a team that has annually disappointed under Harbaugh in recent years.

“Obviously, we got beat in every way you can get beat,” Harbaugh said. “Just a complete disappointment.”

Is Ravens’ Super Bowl window closing?

Once known for Ray Lewis and the nastiest defense in the league, the Ravens now feature the worst defense in the NFL.

Baltimore ranks last among all 32 teams in average points allowed (35.4), while the Buffalo Bills, Detroit Lions and Kansas City Chiefs scored a combined 116 points against the Ravens.

All three of those contests were Harbaugh losses, and it’s getting hard to defend a coach who’s in his 18th season with Baltimore but hasn’t been able to push Jackson — who’s one of the highest-paid quarterbacks in the NFL and on a $260 million contract — to a Super Bowl game.

“This run defense, it’s not OK,” Harbaugh said. “We haven’t fixed that all year yet. That’s the No. 1 thing.”

The Ravens could become the first team in NFL history to allow 600 points in one season, which means that Harbaugh has allowed Baltimore to lose its identity — at the same time that he’s continued to back Zach Orr as defensive coordinator.

“I do not think that that’s the answer,” said Harbaugh, when asked about potential staff changes, according to ESPN.

“We have to go to work, is what we need to do. We need to stick together, is what we need to do. We need to find ourselves. And that has to do with coaches and players (working) together.”

Ravens let go of potential Harbaugh successor

That timid response is a disservice to devoted Ravens fans who’ve been forced to watch Patrick Mahomes and the Chiefs rule over the AFC this decade, while Joe Burrow and Josh Allen have been better than Action Jackson when it’s truly mattered in the playoffs.

It also makes Mike McDonald — Harbaugh’s former DC with the Ravens — starting 3-2 this season with the Seattle Seahawks appear even more painful.

McDonald should never have a better record with Sam Darnold than Harbaugh has with Jackson, but that’s the new low that Baltimore is facing.

Harbaugh is 173-107 in the regular season, which has the 63-year-old on a Hall of Fame path.

Yet his best success with Baltimore arrived soon after he was hired in 2008, and Jackson is now staring at eight consecutive seasons without reaching the Super Bowl.

Considering Jackson’s game-altering talent, it’s inexplicable that the Ravens keep falling short — and that they’re 1-4 to start the 2025 campaign.

How long will Baltimore fans accept losing big games?

Baltimore is officially one of the worst teams in the NFL in Week 5, with the Los Angeles Rams, New England Patriots, Green Bay Packers and two games against the Pittsburgh Steelers still waiting on the schedule.

Harbaugh’s reluctance to adapt and change has limited the Ravens during recent playoff letdowns, and it’s allowed Baltimore to create the worst defense in the NFL this year.

Orr will surely be the first to go when the Ravens make moves.

With Jackson watching another Super Bowl pass him by and year 10 for No. 8 already looming, Baltimore also must consider Harbaugh’s long-term future in purple and black.
