SC State leaders held town hall addressing parents' concerns following shootings ...Middle East

ORANGEBURG, S.C. (QUEEN CITY NEWS) — There are still many questions unanswered following the two shootings at SC State University on Saturday.

The shootings resulted in a woman dead and a man hurt, officials say. The shootings reportedly happened during the university’s Homecoming after the football. The Homecoming concert, scheduled for Saturday night, was canceled, as were all other Homecoming events planned for Sunday, the school said.

One person died as a result of one of the shootings, and another was hurt. The victims have yet to be identified.

President Alexander Conyers assured the attendees that no SC State students were killed or shot. The victims—and the 18-year-old charged in connection with the shootings—were not students at the college.

Sunday evening, the school's president, along with other administrative staff, held a virtual town hall for parents and students to ask any questions surrounding last night's events. They couldn't address questions about the ongoing investigation, but staff did answer questions about safety protocols and what would change as a result of the shootings.

"We have taken significant steps to strengthen the campus security and emergency response," Dr. Gerald Smalls, VP of finance and operations/chief financial officer (CFO), said. There were over 200 security and police officers dedicated to special events like Homecoming, all from South Carolina agencies like SLED, Highway Patrol and the sheriff's office. There was also a command center stationed adjacent to their largest student residence.

Many questions centered around how Saturday night's shootings will impact Homecoming and other large events going forward, as well as the school's policy around off-campus visitors.

School officials say they are working with law enforcement to assess what needs to be changed in the future surrounding campus security during large events. A full assessment of safety protocols and procedures is being conducted.

President Conyer says that within the next week, they will implement a police substation around Hugine Suites, which is an upperclassmen dormitory.

Parents of students were encouraged during the town hall to get the Rave App in order to receive alerts for situations like the incidents from last night.

In addition to tonight's town hall, there will be one for students only in person on Monday for any students who have questions. Currently, the school is offering counseling resources both in person and virtually.

Other Q&As:

Will there be a vigil for the woman killed? Nothing is set yet at this point for an on-campus vigil for the woman killed during the shooting last night. The school is open to working with the young lady's parents and friends on campus to organize an event.

Will there be a curfew in place? Officials are working to determine if that's a next step they need to take, pending an analysis of last night's events with law enforcement.

Why is SLED investigating? SLED is responsible for investigating incidents like this on school campuses.

When will the lockdown be lifted? School officials expect the lockdown will be lifted sometime Sunday night into Monday morning. They say SLED has wrapped up its sweep of the campus following the shootings. They did not give an exact time.
