The Aztecs opened conference play Friday with a resounding 45-24 win against woeful Colorado State at Snapdragon Stadium.
It was the third straight win for San Diego State (4-1, 1-0 Mountain West) and third consecutive loss for CSU (1-3, 0-1 MW).
San Diego State scored early and often, a massive contrast to the Aztecs’ previous game, where the team only managed two field goals in a 6-3 victory against Northern Illinois.
The Aztecs opened up the scoring with six minutes left in the first quarter on Friday.
Quarterback Jayden Denegal connected with receiver Donovan Brown on a 45-yard pass at the 3-yard line. Brown then dashed into the end zone. The extra point attempt by Gabriel Plascencia was good, making the score 7-0.
In all, SDSU ran five plays during the drive and went 82 yards in just under two minutes.
The team’s momentum continued in the second quarter when junior running back Christian Washington, a San Diego native, ran the ball into the end zone from the 2-yard line to make it 14-0.
Colorado State, desperately needing something positive to happen in order to prevent the Aztecs from running away with the game, got it with about 11 minutes left in the second quarter.

— San Diego State Football (@AztecFB) October 4, 2025Rams quarterback Jackson Brousseau threw a 49-yard bomb of a pass into the end zone, where it found receiver Armani Whitfield wide open. Prior to that, SDSU had gone nine straight quarters without an opponent scoring a touchdown.
But after that, it was bombs away again for San Diego State, as Denegal found receiver Jordan Napier via a picture-perfect rainbow of a 42-yard pass that Napier caught at CSU’s 10-yard line and took into the end zone.
After the extra point, the score was 21-7 with 7:28 left in the half. Colorado State threatened, but had to settle for just a field goal, making the score 21-10 Aztecs with just 92 seconds left before halftime.
But SDSU wasn’t done. The team launched a three-play, 75-yard drive that in under a minute resulted in another seven points, to boost their halftime advantage to 28-7. The drive was capped off by a 14-yard run play by another San Diego native, junior running back Lucky Sutton, aka the Luck Truck.
After the half, San Diego State continued to pour it on.
Plascencia nailed a 53-yard field goal to cap a 10-play, 30-yard drive about three minutes into the second half. Then Sutton found the end zone a second time, on a one-yard run up the middle, to make the score 38-10.
In the fourth quarter, Colorado State finally started to make the game interesting again, however briefly. First, Brousseau dove into the end zone from the four-yard line for six points. Then, CSU successfully attempted a two-point conversion to draw closer, 38-18.
But almost as quickly, San Diego State again extended its lead. Senior running back Byron Cardwell, Jr. – yet another San Diego native – broke out on a 20-yard rush to find the end zone and make the score 45-18.
After that, with two minutes left in the game, Colorado State essentially surrendered by pulling Brousseau for redshirt freshman backup Darius Curry, a Long Beach native.
Curry took a couple of sacks, but also completed a few short passes before throwing a 12-yard touchdown to receiver Kory Hall as the clock ran out, for a final score of 45-24.
SDSU’s Denegal threw for 256 yards and two touchdowns, while Cardwell Jr. ran for 129 yards on 15 carries, including two TDs. Sutton had 21 carries for 113 yards and two touchdowns. Receivers Napier (seven carries for 153 yards) and Brown (two for 55) each had a touchdown.
Up next, the Aztecs face another Mountain West opponent, this time on the road against Nevada on Oct. 11. The game’s scheduled to air on the CBS Sports Network and San Diego Sports 760 radio.
Notes: Unless the two teams meet in a bowl game after this season, the next time they play each other they’ll be members of the Pac-12. Both teams, as well as a number of other football schools in the Mountain West, have agreed to defect to the Pac-12. Now the effective date of the switch, July 1, 2026, is less than a year away.
