ARLINGTON, V.A. — A U.S. airman was laid to rest on Wednesday at Arlington National Cemetery over 80 years after his plane was shot down over Germany during World War II.

The remains of Sgt. Lynn Farnham were reunited with his family in Rochester last year. He was killed in February of 1944 by a German fighter plane and, three weeks later, his mother received a letter stating he was missing in action. His remains were buried in an unmarked grave in France until DNA testing confirmed his identity. Sgt. Farnham’s family gathered to honor him at the ceremony, which ended with a 21-gun salute. His nephew, Tom Farnham, spent years uncovering his uncle’s story. Now, his family finally has closure.
