“The human rights situation in Haiti has reached a boiling point”, with abuses and violence having escalated since March, UN rights chief Volker Turk said.
“More than 16,000 people have been killed and some 7,000 people injured in armed violence since January 1, 2022, when we began our monitoring on gang-related violence,“ Turk told the UN Human Rights Council in Geneva.
Turk said some six million people -- half of Haiti's population -- needed humanitarian aid.
“International commitment and backing for this are urgent. Without them, the worst may be yet to come for Haiti and the broader region,“ said Turk.
The UN High Commissioner for Human Rights decried the “spiral of violence” between gang members, the population, and the security forces.
“As of mid-September, drone strikes have killed at least 559 people, including 11 children. Most of these drone strikes are likely unlawful under international human rights law,“ said Turk.
Turk said it was also “deeply worrying” that so-called self-defence groups and spontaneous crowds had killed more than 500 alleged gang members this year.
“We can -- and must -- turn this situation around for the people of Haiti,“ said Turk.
“I have never seen the situation as desperate as it is now. Most indicators are flashing red,“ he warned.
Ann-Kathryne Lassegue, Haiti's ambassador in Geneva, said the government was “doing what it can with the means it has”, but said 90 percent of the UN’s $908 million 2025 humanitarian response plan remained unfunded - AFP
