Emotional darts star consoled by opponent he beat in final of tournament ...Middle East

Ross Smith’s latest tournament triumph was his most emotional yet.

The 36-year-old emerged victorious at the Players Championship 29 in Leicester with a thrilling come-from-behind 8-7 win over Josh Rock in the final.

Why was Smith visibly emotional after his win?

But the win meant a whole lot more to Smith than usual as, after pinning double 19 to win, he hunched over and was instantly consoled by Rock.

Smith, who appeared to be fighting back tears, then pulled in the Northern Irishman for a tight hug before he walked up to collect his darts.

The Kent native’s win came just a handful of days after he pulled out of the Swiss Darts Trophy in Basel due to family reasons.

How did Smith’s victory unfold?

Smith’s triumph marked his sixth Players Championship triumph and his second this year, having prevailed at the 16th event in Hildesheim last May.

It took a monstrous effort from Smith to overcome a high-scoring Rock in the final.

Rock looked likeliest for victory given he led ‘Smudger’ 6-4 and 7-5 in the first-to-eight contest.

But Smith showed remarkable poise under pressure to mount the necessary comebacks.

He wrapped up a third leg on the bounce and ultimately the victory with a stunning checkout of 118, which came via 20, treble 20 and double 19.

The 118 checkout just so happened to be Smith’s highest of the match.

Thanks to his win, Smith pocketed £15,000 and has moved up to 12th in the PDC’s Live Order of Merit.

As for Rock, his runners-up finish meant he took home £10,000 and remained world No. 10.

It was a highly impressive darting affair from both men, as they each recorded ton-plus averages.

Very little separated them on the checkout front, with Smith finishing eight of 14 while Rock managed one fewer from the same number of attempts as his rival.

Although Rock may not have been the last man standing, he enjoyed a highlight reel moment earlier in the Players Championship 29 in this third round encounter against Wesley Plaisier.

With the match tied at 3-3 in their first-to-six match, Rock hit a nine-darter to take the lead.

Rock’s darting perfection gave him all the momentum he needed as the Northern Irishman went on to beat Plaisier 6-3.
