ROCHESTER, N.Y. – While sunshine is often welcomed, too much of a good thing can have consequences.
A quick check of the local rain gauge recently revealed more than just a lack of rainfall, it also contained only a scattering of dead leaves at the bottom. Unfortunately, this visual is reflective of a broader issue which is a growing and intensifying drought across the region.
At the Rochester Airport, rainfall measurements for September tell the story. The total for the month came in at just 0.30 inches and this is well below the monthly average. When compared to historical records, September 2025 ranks as one of the driest on record, with only September 1960 recording less rainfall since official records began in the 1870s.
This dry spell marks a sharp contrast to earlier in the year. Spring brought well above-normal precipitation, with May and June delivering more than 170 percent of typical rainfall. But that trend reversed dramatically over the summer. July and August saw just half the normal rainfall, and September intensified the situation further, delivering only 9 percent of the average monthly total.
It is important to note that droughts develop cumulatively. The prolonged lack of rain over several months has led Western New York into a state of moderate drought. And this is a drought that will take time, and sustained precipitation, to recover from.
There is, however, a glimmer of hope. Forecast data suggests the possibility of showers returning by the middle of next week. This would be a welcome development as we look toward breaking this dry pattern.
